A Plea - Stop Polluting The Andaman Seas!

A Plea - Stop Polluting The Andaman Seas!

I have just returned from a very exciting, thrilling and enjoyable trip to the Andaman Islands. As we had only 6 days at our disposal we were able to visit only a few of the islands and Port Blair.

There are a lot of foreign and Indian tourists who visit the Andaman Islands for a holiday or sight seeing. While some places are very strict about not polluting the sea and the beaches with plastic water bottles or polythene bags, I was shocked to see the Andaman sea flooded with water bottles all the way from the Port Blair (Aberdeen) Jetty to the Ross Island Jetty.

The sight of all those water bottles bobbing up and down in the sea was very disheartening and a sore for the eyes. I really had a strong urge to jump into the water and collect all those bottles and bring them ashore, to clean up the seas.

The Andaman Sea water is very deep blue in color on a normal sunny day and the waters are crystal clear. It's a pity to see it being polluted this way by water bottles, which were obviously been thrown overboard from the ferries that went up and down between Ross Island and Aberdeen Jetty.

I was wondering why the authorities did not take strong action against these offenders who were responsible for this dastardly act. What are the Port authorities, environmentalists, fisheries department, Muncipal council authorities doing?? Are they not aware of the waters being polluted? They could very easily impose a fine on anyone caught red handed throwing water bottles in this manner.

This is a strong plea to all those who are going to visit Port Blair or the Andaman Seas to STOP polluting the seas! And also to the concerned Government officials and authorities in Port Blair...Please Do something to stop this menace before it's too late..! SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT!

Thank you for the links

Those were interesting articles. So, the ultimate answer to reusing plastic water bottles is to clean the bottle before reusing. If you find the bottle itself is weakening or deteriorating recycle... Duh! Sounds like common sense to me. ; ) Like I said, I don't remember when or where I had heard it, but I will admit I laughed it off as it seems everything causes illness and cancer these days. But, I thought I would mention it as a possibility. Thank you for the information and hopefully you have have just improved someone's habits of thoughtless "throw-a-way". @ MJ, Medical studies

about reusing bottles from bottled water have stated that it is safe and there is no harm in using these bottles, provided you clean them thoroughly before each use and do not allow water to stagnate in it for long times to allow bacterial growth. Read this: http://walking.about.com/od/fluids/f/reusingbottles.htm http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/plasticbottles.asp Although there are some who don't recommend it altogether: http://www.ghchealth.com/people-who-frequently-reuse-their-water-bottles-may-be-risking-their-health.html Thanks for your input.. Good Idea, Taprial

Yes, indeed people could reuse their water bottles as many times as possible and the idea to use a biodegradable material as a refill pack is also brilliant...Why are the companies not thinking along those lines? They must be more expensive. Get money writing articles on Xomba Here

Medical studies have shown

That reusing bottles from bottled water is unhealthy and can lead to illness. I don't remember exactly when or where I saw the news report, but it advised against reuse. Your theory is also correct however. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

Water Bottles

There was a time when people used to buy a regular bottle for water and then reuse it as many times as possible. Ever since the supply of bottled mineral water has started, the hazard has gone up coz people know that if they need water they will have to pay for the bottle and hence they throw the old one away. It's about time for the mineral water companies to consider refill packs of mineral water made of biodegradable material. I just hope your concern for the nature is contagious and many people "catch" it. Bare Essentials

good point

You're point about natural pollution is well taken. When our mother earth needs to relieve some pressure she will :) Even the great storms and plagues seem to promote a sense of equilibrium with our symbiosis here. Is she fighting back against us sometimes? I was hiking once in Alabama and saw a former mountain spring fed lake that had sludge so thick... one could walk right across it. The local coal refinery just dumped its refuse into the lake for easy disposal.

Thanks Mr. X

Yes, maybe it IS the Kali-Yuga. Some pollution occurs as a result of processes that are much more complicated and not directly associated with man altogether and then there is this kind of pollution that is as a result of "callous" attitude of people who have no consideration towards their environment, or others environment for that matter. The authorities can very easily prevent this from happening by simply providing "dustbins" on board all the boats and ferries that ply the seas and impose a fine on anyone caught throwing rubbish overboard....! It is really SAD! I hope the "Voters" in Port Blair bring up this point to their government officials before they vote. Get money writing articles on Xomba Here

It's sad

It's terrible how the earth is treated. I too have seen places fouled by inconsideration and greed. I had a professor who one told me it is the time of Kali-Yuga... the cow stands on one leg.
