Please Explain George Washington to a Foreigner…

Please Explain George Washington to a Foreigner…

So there’s this child, a boy called George, who takes an axe and chops down his father’s much loved tree. When his dad discovers the tree felled he, (rightly in my opinion) becomes angry and demands to know who chopped it down. I think the story goes that George waits a few minutes before making a full confession which began “Father, I cannot tell a lie…”

Weird or what? But the thing that I don’t understand is the way this story is upheld to be proof of George’s good character. Wouldn’t George have been bettered by a child who didn’t take an axe and commit an act of wanton destruction? Please explain this story for me and other baffled foreigners everywhere.

While we’re at it, can someone explain the popularity of Sarah Palin? I’m sure this must perplex and confuse other foreigners too. I’ve just read an article here about how Palin is looking good to become President in 2012 – it was very popular (but not as popular as my Are Farts Funny? article http://xomba.com/are_farts_funny). I left a comment underneath which I hope expressed my incredulity sufficiently well.

Pedants are Boring

Children are still reported working in factories in India and people die in the US because they can't afford health care - so it's too early for congratulations Capitalism - and even the right wing press are hedging their bets ready to say "told you so" if things deteriorate. Aplologies about the Christianity theme though - I must have confused you with someone else. I'll admit I was hoping that this would get your goat and lead to some enjoyable banter but this is not to be, perhaps someone else will oblige. I can't check it now but I think you labelled those of an opinion other than yours as "idiot" or some such term meaning low intelligence in one of your comments. This I took to be an insult. Nevertheless, I hope you're well and that you take umbridge when I tell you that "I claim the moral high ground"

"I generally do not debate

"I generally do not debate issues with people who wade in with a personal (unfounded or otherwise) insult." Please show me where the "personal insult" was. "As a student of history, unfortunately mostly written by the victors, even I couldn't show you such a society..." Well, that was my point to mamamia. Capitalism has provided the most opportunity and the highest standard of living to the most people who live by it. Essentially all collectivist societies (communist, Marxist, fascist, etc.) have been implemented by authoritarian regimes. The people of those societies were not free to rise out of their condition, hold real wealth, and gain individual liberties. Collectivist societies have to be regulated by an oppressive government in order to stifle natural human desires - such as the want of freedom. As a "student of history," you should understand that. "I can look back at the experience...of children working 16 hours days and being killed in the process. Exploitation beyond comprehension but in line with the capitalist creed to buy cheap sell expensive." Sure, you can look back to those days, but you're basing your argument on the critiques of capitalism by the very people who wanted to see it fall. Marx and Engels used this type of argument to push their communist agenda - capitalism is evil, it exploits children, it concentrates all wealth into the hands of a few...but the facts of today prove otherwise. Capitalism has done more for those who would otherwise be living in abject poverty than any collectivist ideology pushed by people like Marx. Your unwillingness to accept the overwhelming success of capitalist society does not make capitalism any less successful than it is. "I suppose I could argue that the historical Christ and Christianity can be read as SOCIALISM but I wouldn't like to be argumentative for arguments' sake." You can argue that all you want...and I may even agree with you. But what does that have to do with my comments? *If you're interested in reading my articles, Click Here.

Insults? I have provided

Insults? I have provided none. "Self righteous Bible bashers never seem to teach by example." I'm not sure who you're referring to. If you've taken the time to read any of my articles or comments on this site, you will see that I am not religious and I do not debate with religious premises. Perhaps you ought to learn how to debate properly instead of assuming something about my character in order to dismiss my argument. (That's what we call an ad hominem fallacy.) "Please attempt to argue that the American way is better on this but enough with the insults Publicus." We can't discuss my arguments if you fail to acknowledge what they are and fabricate some perceived "insults" against you or claim that my logic is "offensive." And maybe you ought to begin by not inserting a "c" in my username, like a child on a playground would. *If you're interested in reading my articles, Click Here.

Publicus YUK!

Your logic confounds me and is offensive. Self righteous Bible bashers never seem to teach by example. They should really attempt some objective enquiry - not this auto-pilot spounting. Yes, it's amusing but is it of any value? I deconstructed the Church to find after it was hijacked in the 3rd century it became nothing more than a career option for the upper classes (along with banking, military and law) with some obvious exceptions it hasn't chanhed much - that by the way is the most charitable finding. I'm a practicing capitalist but one with an open mind and not blindfolded to improvements - better working conditions for all, health care, caring for children. I see there is much the US can contribute - with Barack in charge. I also see you need to look to your European cousins for example. For instance, I know people who would be dead if they had lived on your side of the pond because they could not have afforded health care. Here the collective wealth of National Insurance contributions pays for health-care for all. Please attempt to argue that the American way is better on this but enough with the insults Publicus.

Publicus Insults

I generally do not debate issues with people who wade in with a personal (unfounded or otherwise) insult. As a student of history, unfortunately mostly written by the victors, even I couldn't show you such a society - there's always some real idiots who do not see the problems their greed or self importance causes. I can look back at the experience of the working classes via archaelogy, Engels, Rowntree and best of all E P Thompspon and determine conclusively that without a measure of collectivism there would still be instances of children working 16 hours days and being killed in the process. Exploitation beyond comprehension but in line with the capitalist creed to buy cheap sell expensive. I suppose I could argue that the historical Christ and Christianity can be read as SOCIALISM but I wouldn't like to be argumentative for arguments' sake. TEE HEE

Show me a society where

Show me a society where collectivism is voluntary (not forced by government), has resulted in a higher standard of living than a capitalist one, and where the people of that society enjoy a comparable level of individual liberty, and I will concede that collectivism works. And you're right...I probably shouldn't say "we." There are too many idiots that want to believe in the collectivist ideologies that Marx epitomized in his communist philosophy. I guess I figured it was a given that capitalism was understood as being preferable to a society that has thrived under it. I thought that perhaps reason would trump fantasy...but who's reasonable these days? *If you're interested in reading my articles, Click Here.

Capitalism And Collectivism

Capitalism "has been proven to work when applied correctly" - I would say that this applies for collectivism too. Though not a student a history - I understand the history of capitalism is too young and riddled with many failures to say its the perfect system or way of life. "On our side of the pond, we understand the benefits of capitalism and many of us still, and always will, despise those who seek to destroy it by peddling the collectivist nonsense that has a well-documented history of resulting in poverty and death" - Why is that when making such a drastic statement you tend to revert to "we"? I am sure there are many "your side of the pond" - who can see the benefits of both or maybe a new way of life and not just unbridled capitalism! Unfortunately I have not much to offer to argue for/against capitalism or collectivism but I go understand the World we live in and its problems - and I can see that capitalism is not really the panacea of all evils! Saying that Marx "predicted"

Saying that Marx "predicted" the end of capitalism is like a serial rapist "predicting" that he will have sex in the near future. Marx formulated his philosophy with the intent of destroying capitalism. The problem with his philosophy is that it tries to destroy a system that has been proven to work when applied correctly. Europeans apparently haven't figured that out yet. On our side of the pond, we understand the benefits of capitalism and many of us still, and always will, despise those who seek to destroy it by peddling the collectivist nonsense that has a well-documented history of resulting in poverty and death. *If you're interested in reading my articles, Click Here.

George Washinton, W Bush and Palin

Sarkozy and Berusconi are not good looking or not classically good looking as is Palin. She's the exception that proves the rule - politicians are ugly. (Saying that Barack a good looker too - imagine if Palin had been on his ticket - what a good looking, stylish couple!). Also the French and Italian politcial scenes (as that in the UK) are so different to the US. For instance, over here Marxism nor Socialism are not completely dirty words, bordering on the taboo- Marx's economic theories in particular are more popular than ever, (I think because Marx predicted the end of capitalism). I don't think that's a good comparison. Strange about Belosconi, true, but the Italians are strange (tee-hee). They have obviously (as electoral fraud has been discounted) forgiven Bel his sins... a bit like forgiving George Washington for ebvironmental vandalism...

Sarah Palin's appeal

She's a fresh face (and a god looking one), and talks about cleaning out corruption and solving problems in the country. It's similar to the appeal of Sarkozy in France, or Berlusconi in Italy (except that the latter was very corrupt and won the election because he owned most of the media. Oddly enough, Italians decided to put him back in office *again,* despite all the controversies in his first go round).
