Police Shoot 5-Year Old Boy While Shooting at Snake

It is reported in Noble, OK, a 5-year old boy named Austin Haley was fishing with his grandfather, Jack Tracy, when Tracy heard a bullet hit the water a few feet in front of the boat dock where they were standing. Moments later a second shot was fired that hit the child in the head. The police office responsible for the shot was trying to shoot a snake that officers were trying to get out of a tree.

After the incident Tracy put the boy in the back a 4-wheeler and drove to his daughter’s house nearby. When the officers came by the house they didn’t admit that they were the ones who had accidentally shot the boy. The boy was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

The officer suspected of firing the shots has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The situation is going to be fully investigated.

Apparently they don't administer IQ tests for police in OK

When I was going through weapons training for security/law enforcement in the Navy, one of the first basic safety rules we were taught was "Don't fire unless you are sure of what is behind your target." It would be bad enough had the boy been shot by a pass-through bullet from someone the police had right in front of them, but it complete idiocy for a trained police officer to fire what amounts to being straight up in the air. Plus, they should have been using a shotgun to kill the snake, since the shotgun has a wider spread and a shorter kill zone than a handgun. A tragedy indeed that could have been easily prevented.
