Poor vision may lower lifespan
posted October 27, 2009 - 11:40pmReuters reported that poor vision is not only a hardship for the elderly but it was also noted that there seems to be a connection between shorter lifespan. This report was based on a new study. The previous study suggests that there was a link between poor vision and death.
In view of these, researches wanted to know the association between.
More than 3,600 people who were 49 and older in the early 1990’s were studied by Dr. Michael J. Karpa together with his colleagues in Westmead Millennium Institute in Sydney, Australia, showed that more than third of them have died... around 1273 people.
From the results, those with vision problems that couldn’t be corrected were 35 percent more likely to have died during the 13 year period. Those who were younger than 75 were more than twice as likely to have died.
From the Archives of Ophthalmology, the most likely possible link or tie between poor vision and death is trouble walking. It was speculated that most elderly who do not see well may also be less likely to see a doctor regularly or to have prescriptions filled. They are also more socially isolated and less able to seek urgent help.
