Portuguese Water Dog Controversy: Should Barack Obama Have Adopted a Shelter Dog?
posted April 15, 2009 - 11:49amWhen Barack Obama said he would consider adopting a shelter dog, many rescue organizations as well as the Humane Society of the United States were very excited and grateful that Obama would consider a shelter dog as First Family pet. The Obamas dog Bo is a purebred Portuguese Water Dog adopted from a Texas breeder (the same kennel where Ted Kennedy obtained his Portuguese Water Dogs). Now Portuguese Water Dog breeders are getting ready for a possible increase in demand for these dogs, due to Obama's choice. In my opinion, Barack Obama could have been a role model and advocate for animal rescue if he adopted a hypoallergenic dog, like a Portuguese Water Dog, from a shelter. There are plenty of purebred dogs waiting in shelters, especially in this economy, when many animals have been surrendered by owners. Read more thoughts on this topic by clicking the link below.
