Prepaid Cell Phone Plans: Things to Know About Prepaid Providers and How to Save Money

How People Save With Prepaid Phone Plans.

It's true that prepaid plans are a good way for people to save money immediately on their cell phone bills.  But this statement comes with one caveat.  Prepaid plans only make sense if they make sense for you personally. nbsp; That is, your chosen plan needs to fit well with your cell phone use habits.

Make Sure Prepaid Fits Your Phone Usage Habits.

If you are not "prepaid material" you may run into some problems.  Here are a few things to look out for before you decide on your new cell phone plan (these points relate to all cell phone plans - not just prepaid).

Read about the $30 Straight Talk Tracfone Plan that has fans and industry insiders raving.

It may be difficult to decipher true per minute costs for minutes used over and beyond your given plan.  If you aren't careful, you can get hit with expensive overage charges that range anywhere from a quarter to a dollar.  That adds up really quickly.  Text messages - even at a dime a piece - can add up and make your bill look like it has an extra zero or two. Pay attention to where you are getting charged and any information about overage charges.

Some prepaid plans come with a daily access charge, which is just an added charge for every day that you use your cell phone to make or receive a call.  This tariff can add up by the end of the month.  This fee can be as high as a couple of dollars.  People are busy and often miss crucial details relating to the cost of your cell phone use.

Always Check Your Network Coverage for Your Area.

Look at coverage areas before subscribing to a given plan.  You want to make sure that you will have solid coverage in your main areas of use.

Always look at when your purchased minutes expire.  Do they carry over into the next month or do they just disappear?  Also find out if there is a minimum talk time you have to purchase each month.

If you are a heavy cell phone user, then prepaid phones may not make sense for you.  Prepaid phones have traditionally been primarily for lighter talkers who are frugal with their money and use few extra wireless features.  This is changing, however, with the recent releases of unlimited prepaid plans that provide subscribers with unlimited voice, text, and data usage.

A few Companies with Attractive Prepaid Cell Phone Plans.

These plans, which come from companies like Tracfone, MetroPCS, Boost Mobile, and Cricket, work well for some heavy phone users.  You still will want to compare plans against contract plans with "bundles" of features that may be attractive to you.  You always want to consider coverage areas, phone handset availability, available features and costs, and even what phone plans your friends and family have.

If you have free mobile to mobile through a certain wireless company, it may be worthwhile to stay with that company.  And it also depends on what your friends and family have.  It's hard to tell sometimes, but the more effort and research you put into your new plan search, the more money you will end up saving.  There are always pros and cons, but one thing that's certain is prepaid companies are lowering prices and offering more service in order to win more customers.
