On many occasions you may have need to preserve and place your car in storage for a long term. Long term can range from one month to even two tears. The main idea< span> is to prevent the car from damage and sustain its performance and reliability when reuse starts.
Here are some useful tips for engineering grade car preservation techniques:
- Fill up Tank, Add Additive, Corrosion Inhibitors
To prevent condensation the fuel tank needs to be filled up. This means less air is available to the fuel for absorption. Also add fuel stabilizer or corrosion inhibitors and drive the car around a bit to distribute the additive to engine parts. This helps in protecting the engine. - Engine Oil, Spark Plugs
Dirty oil is contaminated with acids and water that can cause premature bearing failure and rust inside the engine. So change the engine oil. Also remove the spark plugs and spray some 'upper-cylinder lubricant' into the cylinders before replacing the plugs. This helps stop the piston rings and cylinder walls from rusting and corroding. - Boot it Up
Ensure that the boot is clean and dry. The boot seal is not always taut and some moisture can collect and condense in the inner fenders and floor. Air it out well for a day before closing it up. - Care for Metal Parts
To inhibit rusting in the engine area, spray lubricant such as WD40 to coat all exposed metal surfaces. This will leave a protective film on the parts susceptible to rusting and corrosion - Off Parking Brakes
Often people engage the parking brakes during normal parking of the car. But if this is resorted to during storage of car, your car run the risk of brake corrosion. So disengage the parking brake to help avoid brake corrosion. - Wheel and Tyre Weight Free
The wheels and tyres need to be weight free when stored for long term. The weight has to go somewhere. So put the car on jack stands. - Disconnect Battery
Disconnect and remove the battery to keep it from draining. Place the battery on a trickletype charger. Or periodically drain the battery, using a small light bulb, and then recharge it with a low-volt charger. - Wash and Wax
Dirt, dust and grime are the biggest threat to the smooth finish of your car exterior. So a thorough wash and waxing thereafter is a must to preserve its finish. Wash the interiors too and allow a for a nice dry. To cover use a proper cloth car cover, not a plastic one. - Keep It Alive
If possible, visit the stored beauty once a month and take it for a short drive. This keeps everything in good shape, preventing things from getting corroded and seals drying out. At the very least have some one start it up periodically. . If you find the concrete floor in your storage unit gets damp or 'sweats' use cat litter, or lay plastic beneath the car to prevent the condensation from reaching your floor pans. - The Fag End
At the fag end of the tips comes the fag end of the car. Plug the tailpipe with a rag to prevent moist air from entering and promoting corrosion.
Now you know cool tips for long term car storage to preserve your car's beauty both intrinsic and extrinsic.
