President Bush and Senator Kennedy Present: Amnesty 101
posted May 20, 2007 - 11:44amThis Monday, at 1:00 pm, the Senate will convene to discuss Senator Kennedy's bill to give amnesty to all illegal aliens living in the United States right now. Right now, it is around 400 pages long. And Republicans in the Senate are just lining up around the block to support it, like
''conservative'' John McCain, the same who couldn't be bothered to show up to vote against a bill issuing mandatory deadlines for our troops in Iraq. Senator John Kyl said on Hannity & Colmes, ''I think the text will be done by tomorrow and there will be plenty of time to read it... I fought very hard for what I believe... I'm confident that the provisions I fought for will make it a much better bill... This is a parole, not an amnesty.''
A Michelle Malkin reader sums it up perfectly: ''If this is a parole, will anyone go to jail for not following the law or will this be another non-enforced law?''
I'm surprised that there aren't more immigrants here legally that are furious over this. Every time I hear the word amnesty, I think of what a slap in the face it is to every person who follows the law and comes here through legal channels. Why bother? Just swim across the Rio Grande and live here for free! You don't have to follow our laws, speak our language, or pay our taxes, and we'll welcome you with open arms, even when you blatantly smuggle drugs across the border. And now, we'll reward you for all of that by just handing you a Z-Visa and making it official. Chalk up another couple million for welfare and prisons!
There are some outraged by this bill. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, ''I strongly oppose today's bill going through the Senate. It is the wrong approach. Any legislation that allows illegal immigrants to stay in the country indefinitely, as the new 'Z-Visa' does, is a form of amnesty. That is unfair to the millions of people who have applied to legally immigrate to the U.S.''
But no one is angrier than presidential candidate Duncan Hunter. ''I vow to oppose this legislation supported by Senators Edward Kennedy and John McCain. It provides a vast new immigration benefit to millions of illegal aliens who have broken our laws to live in the United States,'' he said on his website. ''This package will confirm to the world that the U.S. does not really mean what it says when it comes to immigration enforcement. As a result of the citizenship benefit included in this legislation, despite the fine print, we will see a stampede across our borders.''
It cuts down the Border Fence Act, which Hunter wrote, and President Bush signed into law. In San Diego, the only area where the double fence has actually been built, drug smuggling has decreased by 90%. Crime rates are down as well, including violent crimes like rape, assault, robbery, and murder. But of course, we're just taking in families, right? Not criminals. Oh, wait -- they're automatically criminals... kinda broke the law coming in illegally. What a concept!
As Hunter says, this bill will bring a stampede across our borders. And it will leave them open and porous -- not so good when you have people in the Middle East plotting to kill us.
John Hawkins of RightWingNews.com pointed out that this is not Kennedy's first brush with amnesty. He laid out a timeline:
Conservatives everywhere are outraged by this proposal, as they should be. Unfortunately, Republicans in Congress haven't picked up the hint that they were voted out this past election season for ignoring their base, and now they're just doing the same thing again. They just don't get it, do they? The majority of Americans are against amnesty. We don't want floods of people coming her illegally. Most of us are all for people immigrating here, but we just want them to do it through legal channels, but the government won't enforce our border or deport those here illegally.
Want proof?
In Hazleton, Pennsylvania -- a blue state in the last presidential election -- Mayor Lou Barletta has gained national prominence by winning both the Republican and Democratic nomination. He sent instructions to Democratic voters telling them to write in his name, and it worked. He won 94% of the vote, cruising his way to a third term. What was the position that made him so popular? He proposed the Illegal Immigration Relief Act, which penalizes any landlord who rents to illegal immigrants or businesses that hire them. And he actually plans to enforce that law -- something the federal government can't seem to grasp.
We need 41 Senators to support a filibuster, and right now it isn't looking like that's going to happen. However, as John Hawkins put it, we can try to pull a Harriet Miers. Let them know how unhappy you are about this. Hawkins encouraged his readers to contact senators, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and the Republican National Committee, and I'm doing the same.
As John said, ''If you have a Republican Senator, pick up the phone and call them. Since it's the week-end, you may have to leave a message, but that's fine. If they have to spend 30-40 minutes listening to unhappy constituents first thing on Monday, that's a great way for them to start the day... When you make these calls be POLITE, but firm. And if you have been complaining about this bill, do make the call. If these guys get enough calls, they will back down, but it's not going to happen unless people step up to the plate.''
So make the calls. If Senators can get an idea of how unpopular this bill is, then we might be able to round up enough to filibuster.
Get the names, numbers, and e-mail addresses of US Senators here. Call them. Call them even if they aren't your state senator. Take whatever approach you want, however you think you can convince them -- Republican or Democrat -- to vote against this bill. Like John said, be polite, but firm.
Call the National Republican Senatorial Committee at (202) 675-6000 and the Republican National Committee at (202)-863-8500. Leave messages saying you won't support the reelection of any senator who supports this bill. Don't back down. Keep the pressure on. If the good of the country and the American people isn't enough incentive to get them to vote against this bill, then threatening their political careers will. If they realize this will cost them their spot in the Senate, they'll vote against it. So don't give up. Keep e-mailing, keep calling. We can get the message across, if we all stand together and make our voices heard.
