Promoting your Xombytes Part 2: Mmm Mmm Delicious (PoisedGuru)

Moving on to another of the links you can access directly from Xomba we come upon Delicious.

Del.icio.us - is a collection of favorites, yours and everyone else's.
From their about page. It is a:
social bookmarking website -- the primary use of del.icio.us is to store your bookmarks online, which allows you to access the same bookmarks from any computer and add bookmarks from anywhere, too. On del.icio.us, you can use tags to organize and remember your bookmarks, which is a much more flexible system than folders.

Essentially the site is a publicly searchable database of all the sites that you drop links and bookmarks to. Here you store bookmarks online, for example to your Xombytes page as well as each Xombyte itself, so that others can find them and if they are interested read the articles. The site allows you to share your links with everyone as well as search and browse the links of all the other members.

The bookmarks are organized by tags, similar to what we do here at Xomba. The more accurate your tags the better chance that people will come and read your Xombyte because they will know exactly what it is about.

The site allows you to store a title, brief description and the list of relevant tags so that other users have enough information to decide if they want to read what you have bookmarked.

Del.icio.us is also a networking site. If you find someone on there that likes your links or whose links you like then you can connect and keep track of new posts by them and vice versa. If a person is in your network you can share a link with them simply by clicking on their username which will then save the link for them so when they log in they will see the link awaiting them in their links for you section.

Users can also subscribe to specific tags, for example writing by going to the edit section of your profile. That means if you use a specific tag in all of your posts, like your username or pen-name, then other users could easily subscribe to all of your writing by simply subscribing to that tag.

On the main page is a hotlist. The hotlist articles show you who saved this link in their own collection and who left comments on the links. In this respect the site works similarly to Digg where things with the most people are on the Hot List for longer.

Also on the main page is a tags to watch area which also utilizes a ‘tag cloud’ like we do here for tags and categories. The size of each tag represents its popularity. The red tags are the tags you are sharing with others. So a good thing might be to find the ’hot tags’ and be sure that if you have a relevant article that you use that tag.

There are also, in the upper right hand corner, two small links to popular and recent which work in the same way that ours do here I imagine. Popularity is based on highest number of recent saves and Recent is based on a chronological list of bookmark saving lately.

The really nice thing about Del.icio.us is that there is not limit to what can be posted there. You can create links to ALL of your content pages here on Xomba and further increase your chances of people reading them. But be sure to use the site smartly and wisely, I suspect they too are unforgiving like the DiggNation.

Can you please explain?

Having read this excellent article for a second time, I'm a bit lost with the last sentence: "But be sure to use the site smartly and wisely, I suspect they too are unforgiving like the DiggNation." What are some of the non-smart and unwise things a newbie can do while using the Delicious service? And what is the real meaning of "unforgiving"? (I hope the consequences would not be as serious as those portrayed in Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" hahaha!) Like, they delete your account and ban you forever from their site or what? I'd appreciate it if you could please provide more info on these important points as well. Many thanks in advance.

Nice article. Thanks!

I always wondered what that "delicious" thing was all about but never had the time to investigate. Now I think I know what it is and I can see how it can in theory increase the traffic to one's own articles. I'll read the other "PoisedGuru" articles as well. Very educational. Muchas gracias!
