Promoting your Xombytes Part 4: Reddit.com What's this all about (PoisedGuru)
posted October 20, 2006 - 8:50amReddit is similar to Digg in that it’s what’s popular and hot on the web. But it combines a little Delicious where you basically add bookmarks to the site to share with everyone that uses the site.
Reddit goes one step further and when
you vote on other links, or when people vote that they like something you wrote, it will then educate their filtering system so that similar links will then be presented to whoever voted that they liked your post. The options on Reddit are fairly limited.
- Read – Read other links that were submitted by Reddit users.
As with all sites there are some rules you should follow:
- Don’t post duplicates. Check to make sure what you’re posting hasn’t been posted already.
- Link directly to the content. “Old content and self-promotion are okay, because Reddit is a meritocracy.” – Reddit.com help page
- Give your post an interesting and informative title
- ”This Is Not Digg(TM). Think before you post. "LOL very funny haha"-type comments will be mercilessly downmodded into oblivion.” – Reddit.com help page
- Don’t flood reddit with numerous posts at the same time.
- Don’t make a TITLE LIKE THIS. Use caps only where needed
As stated it is a meritocracy, so things go up and down based on what the other users think. Don’t be angry if you get downmodded, it just means that people aren’t interested in that particular article. Don’t attack other users and don’t go through all their links and downmod them because they did it to one of your posts, it’s how the site works. If you don’t like how it works then simply don’t use it.
All other questions about Reddit can be answered on their help pages.
Here are some interesting things about Reddit (from their ‘nifty features’ page):
• When a submission's number is colored, it means it's reached the #1 spot on reddit. Clicking on this number will take you to a running list of all the #1 reddit links.
• Both the reddit toolbar and bookmarklets have a "serendipity!" button, which takes you to a random link in the reddit queue. Great if you're feeling serendipitous.
