Psychs Slam Dr. Phil Over Britney Visit

Psychs are slamming Dr. Phil over his unscheduled visit with Britney. The good doctor was not invited by Spears and was motivated by her parent(s) agreeing to be on his program as part of an intervention.

re: The "good" doctor lost his license to practice psychology

this situation happens more often than people realize (clients working for shrinks). it's unethical in all states (and illegal in some) because the client is in a position to be used and abused by the shrink.

Not to mention...

Spears's parents may have wanted McGraw to meet with their daughter, but since Britney is an adult, she has the right to choose who she may allow to visit her in her hospital room, and shouldn't have her parents' choice forced on her. McGraw's show may be fine for airing family squabbles and such, but Spears clearly has serious psychological and substance problems... not the kind of problems that are best treated via TV talk show "therapy." Any progress with a therapist is only going to work if there is a good match between client and therapist, and having a therapist forced on someone by one's parents is not a good thing. McGraw's "tough love" approach may not be at all appropriate for Spears. And probably the last thing Spears needs is to receive even more public exposure, via her parents, McGraw, or anyone else. Today the Spears family has said that McGraw violated their trust by speaking publicly about visiting their daughter. He would have been better off not meeting with her at all, but barring that, should not have talked to anyone publicly about it at all.

The "good" doctor lost his license to practice psychology

Dr. Phil may have a PhD in clinical psychology, but he is no longer licensed to practice it in the state of Texas: Quote:Ethical violation The Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists imposed disciplinary sanctions on McGraw on January 27, 1989 for an inappropriate "dual relationship" reported in 1988 by a therapy client/employee from 1984. McGraw was ordered by the Board to take an ethics class, pass a jurisprudence exam, complete a physical evaluation, undergo a psychological evaluation and have his practice supervised for one year in order to continue his private practice in Texas. McGraw admits to giving the client a "job" at his office (which is not allowed), but denied carrying on a sexual relationship with the 19 year old, who says their relationship was "sexually inappropriate."[10][2][11] As of 2008, McGraw is still not licensed to practice psychology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_McGraw Disciplinary Sanctions (McGraw, Philip C. detailed on page 25/41) Many have characterized Dr. Phil as Jerry Springer with a doctorate. That is a horse of different color

It seems that we were responding to different items. I did not know what happened on his show since I do not watch his show... I was commenting on the article in the blurb which was about him going and visiting her in the hospital to talk to her about getting help... I could not understand why they were so upset that he went and talked to her in her room about getting help.... The article did not mention him discussing her on his show... only that her parents might be guests on his show in the future... It also said that at first she would not listen to him... but that she came back and listened to him for 15 minutes... which seems to be longer than she has listened to anyone talk to her about getting help. The only way she will get help is if she decides to take the help that is offered. No one can do the work for her. She has to want to change and to be willing to work for that change to happen. It seems hopeful to me, that she did at least listen to him. That, at least is a step in the right direction. Angel

Reply to "Maybe We Read Different Articles!"

On Dr. Phil's last show, I heard him talk about Britney Spears, and his diagnosis. Since Britney didn't give him permission to do this, I believe this is unethical. Dr. Phil's guests on his show, all want to be there, and know they will be discussed on national TV.

check his credentials and his requirements for guests

dr phil has no business trying to treat her. he won't even allow patients who have a diagnosed mental illness on his show. to even have thought about doing a show with britney and her parents was wrong. the problem here is britney is too high profile herself. they can put her in the hospital all they want but if they have employees who are enamored (sp) of the whole celebrity lifestyle then she won't get any better.

Maybe We Read Different Articles????

I have not seen anything about him talking about her on TV. He may be talking to her parents on TV, but that is not certain. The other psychologists and psychiatrists were objecting to him talking to her in the privacy of her hospital room, since he does not have privileges at that hospital. However, hospitals routinely extend guest privileges to visiting docs, so I just don't see that as really being a professional issue. The also stated that the hospital only let him in because he is a bigger than life TV personality.... I am merely saying that maybe a bigger than life high profile doc will make more of an impression of her than one who is not involved in that industry.... Perhaps it takes a celebrity to treat a celebrity... in this case... I don't see it as a horrible breach of ethics for him to try. Angel

High Profile!

It seems like to me some of Britney's troubles are because of the media attention. It seems unprofessional, and unethical for a psychologist to go on national TV, and tell people that Britney is unbalanced, and manic depressive, or bipolar. Would you like it if all your health problems were printed in the newspaper? Also, there are medical privacy laws, and I believe Dr. Phil is breaking them. Celebrities now days, have a lot more media people out there covering them. It used to be just print media, now there's electronic media, like the Internet. Think about us everyday people. We would not like it if people filmed us at work, and everyone saw our mistakes. Oops, I filed that file under Z, instead of A, and now my next door neighbor knows it! Oops, I painted that car green instead of red. Yes, professional athletes, musicians, and actors know they are in the public eye, and paid accordingly but you know it comes at a stressful price. Should we be surprised that these jobs come with mental breakdowns?

Dr Phil and Britney

I can understand their objections, but Britney seems to live a high profile life... maybe a high profile intervention is something that would work for her... It seems like nothing else has worked.... Angel
