Puerto Rican Square Culture: The Plazas of Old San Juan

Plaza de Armas
Plaza de Armas is Old San Juan’s main square and was created by city planners to serve this purpose. Four century old statues stand in the Plaza de Armas and represent the four seasons.
Plaza de Colon
Plaza de Colon is named for Christopher Columbus. At the pedestal of the statue are bronze statues that record important dates in the life of the explorer. A number of dining establishments can be found near Plaza de Colon such as Café Berlin and the Parrot Club. Plaza de Hostos
Plaza de Hostos is a great place to stop for a piragueros. This frozen flavored ice treat abounds in Puerto Rico. The hot, sunny weather makes most anytime a good time for a piragueros.
Plaza de Quinto Centenario
Plaza de Qunito Centenario commemorates the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the New World. The statuary in the Plaza de Qunito Centerario was created by Jaime Suarez a reknowned Puerto Rican artist. Plazuela de la Rogativa
Plazuela de la Rogativa is the Plaza of the Procession and commemorates a strategic coup that Puerto Rico pulled off against the British. Blockaded and cut off by British forces seeking to gain control of the port, the citizens the mayor ordered a divine procession to ask for the saints help. The women in the procession held lights and bells that the British mistook for reinforcements. The Brits fled and Old San Juan was saved.
Plaza de San Jose

A museum dedicated to musician Pablo Casals is also located on this square. The world famous cellist died at his Old San Juan home at age 96.
