The origin of the word highway can be traced to the time of the Roman empire when the roads connecting big cities were constructed on six to seven feet high embankments. This was done to enable the troops traveling on these roads to have a commanding view of the surrounding area. The raised level of the road facilitated drainage and reduced the chances of possible attack on the troops by the enemies.
