Questioning the Christian "Truth"
posted October 25, 2008 - 12:21pmI question the Christian Bible for many reasons and I will explain them as best as possible.
Let's start with the fact that Christianity is not an "original" belief, but an edited and amended belief. Christainity has its roots in Judaism. In fact, the "Old Testament" was actually taken from Jewish Scripture or laws called the Torah. The first five books of the Hebrew Bible. The Torah and the "Old Testament" are more or less the same with some slight differences in the numbering of verses and there are some significant differences in the translations.
Early Christianity kept some of the doctrines and practices of the Jews while rejecting others. Christians held the Jewish scriptures to be authorative and sacred. In fact, early on in the stages of Christianity, it was discussed whether the Gentiles (non - Jewish) converts should become Jewish as part of becoming Christian. Peter decided that the Gentiles did not have to. See, Christianity was not created by Jesus, but by Jesus' Apostles (messengers) and disciples (learners).
When Christianity decided to create its own scripture, they translated the Hebrew Bible by using two different translation methods: Septuagint, the greek translation and targun, the Aramaic translation. With these translations, the Christians created the "Old Testament" and later added to it with other texts to create the New Testament. The New Testament is the "evidence" that proves Jesus is the Messiah, the Eternal King or God as well as other Christain beliefs by using written words of Jesus' reputed preachings and actions.
When the New Testament was established, a criteria was develpoed for the many writings to be included. This criteria was as follows:
1. It had to be written or sponsored by an Apostle.
2. It had to have orthodox content
3. It had to be publically used by a prominent church or a majority of churches.
A criteria needed to be established because many documents began circulating among churches. Some documents were claimed to be apostolic in origin, however, others were summations of teachings entrusted to a particular church center. Additionally, several of these writings were intended to extend, interpret and apply apostilic teaching to meet the needs of Christians in a given locality. Basically, the documents needed to be judged as to the authenticity and proper application to the Christian Faith...by man or a group of men.
If you search, "origins of the New Testament" on the Internet, you will find many sights with a lot of information. You will also find on these sight the debates of what documents, books or canons should be included in the New
Testament. Some writings that were previously used in Teachings, were cast aside for inclusion, others were deemed false and others were deemed just not necessary.
For these reasons, I wonder and question whether the Christian Bible as we know it today, through it's many translations and revisions by "man": Is it truly complete? Does the Bible contain all of the Words of God? Or is it a book of selected words of God to confuse the masses?
Isn't Christianity an interpretation of an exisitng belief, expanded to meet the needs of a man's teachings who claims to be God in human form?
Or maybe the many religions and debates are so that we will not follow any ONE religious path set forth by others, but to reach out and learn, to think for ourselves and provide our own criteria for God's Truth? Because being with God is a personal journey and is experienced in an individualized way.
Is it not the goal to align oneself to be in the grace of God, whether on earth or in Heaven?
Furthermore, it is my understanding that many of the faiths in the world believe in the Creator of life, whether he had help or not, the existence of Jesus as God, and what the afterlife is or is there life after physical death are the debates.
And my final question...What makes the Christian Bible and the Christian Way the ONLY DEVINE TRUTH?
