Racism leading to many posts not even being read.
Racism leading to many posts not even being read.
I read this story recently about an Indian blogger whose blogs are read by a lot of people all over the world. She is an Indian living in Mumbai with a decent name i think, her blog is called evawhite. something. com . When asked why she uses pseudonym she said that what she writes about what appeals to western public but when she had her Indian name in the URL she didn't get many hits or people who wanted to read her blog after being referred by friends were apprehensive with just the URL sounding different.
When she changed the URL to a name that sounded western like evawhite, her blog was recognised even before it was opened.
Racism exists everywhere, so much prejudice is there at work, public places, even government rules are askew, favouring the majority in not only your country but every country. Racism is in Human blood i think. The only place where Racism is not apparent or maybe doent exist is in sports particularly Olympics. Fastest Men on earth were mostly Blacks.
Even Blacks are so obsessive about what they should be called and not what people think about them. They keep changing their name to African - Americans and Native americans every 10-15 years , it makes no sense. Why are you so obsessive about what they call you, shouldnt you be working towards bettering yourselves instead. Shakespeare said whats in a name, a rose can be called anything it will still be a rose.
Please people don't concentrate on names and i think that is the worst kind of racism, the kind which even Cartman would hate.
Respect.
Racism, is a factor in a lot of things. And so is reverse racism. In other words you don't even have to be in the majority to practice racism. :(
However, your friends blog is a bit different. Regardless of racism, it is important to know your target audience and to market accordingly. For instance if it were written in Chinese but it was meant for an American audience, it obviously wouldn't attract much attention due to the fact that most Americans don't speak Chinese.
Indian names are not common in America, so mainstream Americans are not likely to be able to even pronounce them let alone suffer struggling with spelling them. They sound and look foreign and that can be a put-off. You don't have to be acting racist not to like how a name looks or sounds per say.
I myself work with several Indian doctors and their names are difficult to spell and pronounce properly. Many of them put on a superior attitude and walk around treating non-Indians very poorly. Many of these guys practice discrimination to non-Indians and those less educated.
There is little that can be done about racism as it is often born of pride and fear of the unknown. But you can study and work hard to accomplish good marketing to promote your goods amongst your target market.

what you're describing doesn't really have anything to do with racism, I think it's simply a matter of supply and demand. If she's targeting a western audience with her blog there is not many people that would associate a typical Indian name that they cannot pronounce with something that would be interesting to them, simply because an american writer is likely to write better about american issues in a similar fashion an american blog would not gain much popularity in India would it? Same thing with black people in runnning sports, a lot of black people have physical properties that makes them superior in certain sports. There's differences between races, this is a fact, but it's not racism. or do you think there should be more white people in elite running sports even if there is further between the real running talents within the white race? Supply and demand , as simple as that. I disagree with you though, the worst kind of racism is not the namecalling, it's denying equal opportunities based on race, when this happens systmematically within a society with the governments blessing it's even worse. I wouldn't read to much into the sudden popularity of a blog that changed it's name. That's just the nature of the internet
Firstly American blogs are popular in India, everything american is popular here.
Physical properties according to race is irony, i think.
I agree with you, equal opportunity denied is the worst but this begins somehwere else you know, when the senator who makes the law gets exposed to prejudice and discrimination as a kid he grows up influenced with rascism and rascist thoughts.

may be popular in India , but that doesn't mean anything Indian is necessarily popular in America. Physical properties according to race is not irony, it's a fact. You aknowledge this fact yourself here "Fastest Men on earth were mostly Blacks". Chineese people are generally not as tall as your average caucasian. White men can't dunk etc.. But it is not racism to aknowledge these facts. The most obvious physical property that sets different races apart from eachother would be skin color but this is not the only one and there are a million different shades from black to white...
It's important to know your target audience and to cater to their needs. If that means a Western name then so be it. So that is not racism.
I agree with Martin... a name that has wider appeal will attract more people. If the blogger is writing to reach lots of people, she will do that by coming up with a name that will reflects that. I have several blogs but don't use my name in any of them, because such a name wouldn't say anything about what the blog is about.
A person might attract more readers with a blog title that indicates what the blog is about, like derekjeternews or gangulynews or whatever.
If a blogger wants to use their own name that's OK to, but it will attract fewer readers.
Also, if an Indian person uses an Indian name as the title of their blog, many Westerners might assume the blog is not in English and may pass it by for that reason.
I used to never open chinese sounding blogs and always think i'm racist or what.
Thanks people, i read what i want, right.

you said the only place racism probably doesn't exist is in sports. I have to disagree with you there is racism in sports, or had really taken a close look. There are plenty examples, but I will give just one-when Tiger Woods was competing and winning early on in his career I do recall the racist remarks he received.
Thanks for your comment.

what you mean... you felt you were racist if you avoided blogs with Chinese-sounding names, or other people felt you were if you avoided them?
I'm attracted to blogs that seem like they might be of interest to me; sometimes the names are a good clue to what they're about, sometimes they're not. If one sounds like it's in a language I don't understand, I'll probably pass on it (though I do check some out, just to see what they're about). Or I hit the "next blog" button on Blogger to see what random blogs it comes up. Even a blog in a foreign language may have some interesting pics.
ok ok I admit it, i hate the chinese, i am racist.

If I started preachin` how proud I am to be white, I would be yelling about how my pale-skin kin managed to conquer entire colors of being, managed conquest of the Greek and Roman systems of schooling, and still manage to hold firmly to their hick stereotypes ... AAAAAAAAA-MeeUhn!
But then I would 'risk' being painted a backwards, prejudiced, greedy bigot.
