Raging Rattler

Raging Rattler

I remember one year a friend of mine “Ross Smith,” who has gone home to be with the Lord, and my son, decided to go quail hunting up at Swan Lake. My son was 5 or 6 years old at the time, so this was 18 years ago, but who’s counting? On the way up to Hagelstein Park we killed a Rattle Snake. It wasn't just any snake, this snake was stretched out in the road at least 9 ft. long. It had been real cold here in Klamath Falls Oregon, and for about a week we had what they call an Indian Summer. Indian Summer is when the weather gets real warm like spring time but it only last a short while.

I stopped the truck and shot the snake with my Remington pump action 12 gauge shot gun. I explained to my son T.J. that snakes were out because of the warm weather, and that I wanted him to stay close to me.

We were having a great day hunting. Ross and I almost got our limit. T.J. began running back and forth to the car getting chips, pop, etc. I decided to head that way myself, and as I was following him down this path, he jumped up on a log and landed on this big rock, and back off the rock running.

I came down the path and stepped up on the log, then stepped down in front of the big rock, when all at once my foot began to move. I stepped back and it began to rattle. I fell backwards, and between my feet as I keep scrambling, was the biggest buzz tail I'd ever seen before or since.

I accidently shot under the snake. I was so glad I grabbed my Browning Automatic, because the second shot, I took the snakes head off. My son has seen me fight a lot of fights, and do things that were pretty crazy, but that was the first time he ever saw me afraid of anything; and he remembers that today. That Diamond Back had 18 rattlers and a button. That is one hunting trip I will never forget. We have not seen another Rattler there since.

Another Snake

Your snake kinda reminds me of the one my step-dad shot when we were camping in the Cuamaca Mountains, outsid of San Diego, California. Its carcass stretched completely across the front of a 1946 Chevrolet sedan and extended 6 or 7 inches beyond the opposit fender. Sure was cool.

Thank You I did go to the site and was amazed, also a little suprised as I had heard of the one in Texas, but not the one in Florida. James & Sherry Grimes

Rattlesnake Festival

There is a festival in San Antonio, Fl (yes, Florida, not Texas) where they used to hold a contest to see how many rattlers they could get. It was a pretty big to-do - country music singers (first time I heard bluegrass live), gopher turtle races and such. I went a coupla times as a kid and can remember the bags and bags of live snakes these guys would bring back. The festival still happens but they no longer hunt the rattlers or have real turtle races instead they have a snake show and fake turtle races. I put the link in case your interested. http://www.rattlesnakefestival.com/ Visit my homepage here

Now, that's a snake!

I haven't seen any of the poisonous critters that big around here, although I did see a gopher snake over 6' long nearby. Is that the snake from the story? I only ask because that one in the photo looks like its head is still intact. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!
