Rahul Dravid and ICC nominations
posted September 7, 2006 - 2:26amWe all know the story of the tortoise and the rabbit. Yesterday, when I heard the news of Rahul Dravid getting nominated for four ICC awards, I once again remembered that story. Dravid, the tortoise of the Indian cricket has done it again. Surpassing many of his much hyped colleagues, Dravid once again proved his mettle by winning four nominations for the ICC rankings.
In a country that thrives on sensationalizing everything, Dravid never got the recognition he deserved. While we applaud the likes of Sehwag and Dhoni for their occasional outbursts of talent, we largely undermine the consistent contributions of Rahul Dravid. Just look a the categories Dravid has won nominations for; cricketer of the year, Test Player of the Year, ODI Player of the Year, and Captain of the Year. These awards are ample proof to the fact that Rahul Dravid has contributed handsomely to all aspects of the game on a consistent basis. While Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan have won one nomination each, the rest of the ‘stars’ in the team have failed to win even a single nomination. This again proves how instrumental Dravid has been in the last season for team India both as a player and as a captain.
It’s time the Indian media and the fans give Dravid the respect he deserves and rate him alongside the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Sehwag.
If not above them!
