Rates of Chlamydia and Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases Soar in U.S.
posted November 14, 2007 - 1:59amThere have been some success stories recently regarding public health in the U.S. The fight against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) isn't one of them.
A new report for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that there are almost 3 million new chlamydia infections a year, and drug-resistant gonorrhea is becoming more common.
STDs are up sharply across the U.S., with rates up particularly in the South and West. Many of the 19 million Americans who become infected with an STD each year are teenage girls and young women, who can lose their fertility if a disease like chlamydia is not diagnosed and treated.
The good news is that the major STDs examined in the study are all curable if caught in time.
