First of all, you are a writer; so your 'being harsh'--even if you DO write down whatever your 'harshness' evokes in you--is little more than background static to the readers ... oh, it's easily picked-out and easily 'blamed on you'; but you have to remember that readers choose the writing's emotion in the end. (I feel like I have to say that because people too often directly mistake 'things a writer writes/says' for 'things a writer thinks' ... it's USUALLY good to think what you say, but not always!) I haven't ever seen any of the shows you mention (BBC?
