Regina Spektor, one of the few respectable female singers
posted February 29, 2008 - 7:51pmI have never really been into female singers. Women of our generation tend to sing about trivial subjects. The lyrics are about going to the club and hooking up with guys, etc. Or they whine about how some guy broke their heart. Can you say "cliché"? These female singers even portray themselves as unintelligent whores e.g.: Brittney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and Fergie.
But there were a few that always got through to me over the years. In the 90s, there was the lovely and angry Jewel who sang viscious lyrics with a sweet voice. And then there was Alanis Morissette with "Jagged Little Pill." Another brilliant female singer who didn't exploit herself and other women's sexuality. She sang honest lyrics about what a woman feels about life, men, and pain. I have to admit that Gwen Stefani had years of integrity as a musician. When she was a part of No Doubt, I really dug their sound and what they stood for. But once she went solo, she lost any ounce of respect from me.
Recently, though, there has been a severe lack in female singers worth anything. Brittney Spears has fallen even lower than her teen pop days with losing her children and hospitalization. Most of the rising woman stars are still very unimpressive with their trite themes and an absence of tasteful clothing in their music videos and album covers. But one singer really stands out to me as honorable: Regina Spektor. She's been around for awhile unbeknowest to me. But she still is singing her heart out and playing the piano like a rockstar. Regina Spektor sings about important issues and honest feelings of a woman. Her music is fun, it's painful, it's enlightening. She is one classy woman who rocks the red lipstick and kills on the piano. Thank you Regina for standing up for the integrity of women!
