Remember the 80s?
posted August 24, 2006 - 1:13pmIt seems, at times, that the best parts of our former decades are often forgotten, while mistakes and catastrophes resurface with those too young to remember the devastation. In walking through the mall, I realize how old I have become in these last few years. I see young girls wearing what I now look back on in pictures from childhood, when I was too blinded by my ultra-cool new wave bangs to know how ridiculous I looked. I ask myself, when did skinny jeans and leg warmers come back? When did it become once again socially acceptable to wear leggings under short skirts and ankle socks with high heeled shoes? Just when I had faith that these things were dead and buried along with 'Hammer' pants and the mullet, here they are again. I wonder if we are doomed to repeat the same vicious cycles of bad taste. I remember once my mother telling me that I should never throw away any of my old clothes because I would never know what would come back around in twenty years. I suppose she is somewhere right now saying "I told you so."

ALF
I loved ALF. I also loved the Cosby Show and Family Ties. Here's the thing, 80's music was excellent, but 80's sitcoms were the perfect blend of cheesy mixed with a vague sense of social awareness i.e. Theo's experiement with smoking and Vanessa's drinking on the Cosby Show. And what about Diff'rent Strokes.
Good Lord I've opened a can of worms I might better close.
Good stuff,
Chris
oh the leggings
I can't say that I see any problem with people hanging on to the 80s wear, and I personally could not live without all of my 80s cartoon wear. (Go Voltron force!) The problem is there are now little girls that weren't even ALIVE in the 80s wearing this stuff. What do they know about dancing and singing into a hair brush to Depeche Mode? Where's their allegiance to the Brat Pack and eternal love of ALF (because we all know ALF is the greatest)? This is the reason why there are so many cover songs/movies out these days. No one appreciates the originals anymore. So if anyone wants to wear their leg warmers and side ponytails...be my guest, but at least know your roots, and steer clear of the teenyboppers.

Call me a dork...
...but I own the leggings. And the bangle bracelets. And the leg warmers. In fact, I 've been trying to bring back leg warmers for five years only to discover that they showed up on the runways last fall. Perhaps people may think I am a slave to trends but I will fully redeem myself with my next statement. Last week I bought myself a t-shirt bearing the image of Mumm-ra from the Thundercats. It says "One Bad Mother". Oh yes, I REMEMBER the 80s :-)
Don't forget
Don't forget about new wave and hip-hop.
Music in the 80's was dream. There was so much variety out there to choose from. The market wasn't quite saturated with corporate cookie cutter bands. Don't get me wrong they were there, but not like today.
Remember MTV?

80s music
Herein lies a whole new can of worms. I agree that 80s pop is vastly superior to any of the new junk you hear today. Though I find that this is generally the minority opinion. I put forward that Michael Jackson had some darn good music back in the day, and until he became and 'alleged' child molester, other people were not afraid to agree. It's amazing how a musician's personal life can reach back into history and smear their accomplishments up to that point. Perhaps if everyone focused on the music and didn't give so much of a crap who was in his bed at the time the music was being made...the world would be a better place. But I digress.

Still stuck
I'm still stuck in the fashion casulty world and will never be cool again because I am a parent. Damn!
music
I'll make the arguement that music in the 80's is much better than the pop music of today.
