Remembering Tom Coughlin
Remembering Tom Coughlin
The Jacksonville Jaguars weren't even playing in the big game last night. Yet; in Jacksonville Beach, one would have thought they had just won after the Giants upset the mighty New England Patriots. Fireworks and cheering fans pierced the night skies of the beach after that final second ticked off of the game clock.
Nearly everyone here was a Giants fan last night. Some were just because they didn't like the Patriots. Most were fans of Tom Coughlin, the rugged coach who has often been criticized for his military like discipline and physically grueling practices.
Jaguar’s fans remember two trips to the AFC Championship game; courtesy of Tom Coughlin. We were spoiled back then. It seemed so easy to get there. The Jaguars haven't been there since.
We also remember a different Tom Coughlin. Not the stern faced coach, but the kind hearted man. Yes; I said kind hearted!
Coach Tom Coughlin has donated millions to the children of our fair city through the Jay Fund. The fund was established after one of Coughlin's Boston College players died of Leukemia.
There are few outside of children's health care here in Jacksonville who realizes just how important a figure Tom has been in our community. I know. I've cared for some of the children he has helped. I've heard the stories of his compassion and involvement.
Congratulations to Tom Coughlin and the NY Giants. It could not have happened to a better man.
