Built in the 1920s as a movie house, the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair has undergone an extensive renovation and will reopen in the Fall as a new live music venue.
The Wellmont is the latest project of the New York concert promoter Bowery Presents, which runs NYC venues including Bowery Ballroom and the Mercury Lounge. In the last few years, when many concert venues in NYC were closing down, Bowery Presents was actually opening new ones, including Terminal 5 in Manhattan and the Music Hall of Williamsburgh in Brooklyn.
The Wellmont Theatre brings the Bowery's touch to Montclair, a well-heeled northern New Jersey suburb that already features a number of cultural attractions (as well as its own minor league baseball team).
The pop brother act Hanson will open the Wellmont in November, to be followed by other name acts including Steely Dan, Brian Wilson, Tony Bennett, the Hasidic Jewish reggae hip-hop artist Matisyahu, and Rufus Wainwright.
