Review of the book MISERY by Stephen King
posted July 1, 2008 - 2:44amOh My God is all i can say after i read this wonderful book. God damn you if you don't read this book , hehehehehe.
( "I hate you Kenny" --- Eric Cartman).
Misery is a book that starts of with Author Paul Sheldon all relieved and glad that
his series of novels on Misery Chastain and imaginary bestselling character he invented , coming to an end with the last novel Misery's child.
He misjudges a storm and jumps is his car over a small cliff and crashes , severely injuring his legs. Gets rescued by a middle aged lady called Annie Wilkes and his misery begins!
First thing he notices is he is not in the hospital, Annie takes him to her Farm house which is very isolated considering throughout the story only two cars pass by the house.
Annie has a mental problem and she is catatonic. Paul knows he is in trouble by the overly assertive tone of Annie and the maternal smile that she gives when she is assertive that screams ," I know what is good for you asshole"! Paul gets addicted to the pain relieving tablets called Novril that she gives him everyday.
She is addicted to Misery, she is the number one fan of Paul Sheldon and when Paul's recently released book is read by Annie , she gets angry and burns the manuscript of his new book called Fast Cars because of the swearing in it.
Annie gets devastated when she know Misery has died(in the book) and leaves him in pain for 51 hours.
Paul discovers a way to get out of the room with her bobby pin. gets his fix, steals some drugs and makes a dent in the doorway when his wheel chair gets stuck.
Annie wants him to bring Misery to life and now we are well into the life of Paul whose misery seems never ending. Paul writes the book on the Royal typewriter with the missing n. Rewrites it because Annie is the best critic for Misery , right? Man does my heart go out for Paul at this point in the book.
The best scene in the book i think is when Annie is standing with the blow torch and an Axe and Paul thinks she is gonna chop his dick and she instead chops his leg from ankle , coz she knows that he tried escaping. Man that was intense !!!
Paul finishes the book and then convinces Annie that she helped him write the greatest book in his life. Burns first few pages along with lot of paper and lighter fluid and Annie dies at last.
I feel a little sad for Annie coz she was a patient of a mental condition after all.
Paul is a character which was inspired by an incident in King's life where a fan did enter his house over the conclusion in one of his books.
