Review of the book "Something Wicked This Way Comes"
I recently read this book from one of my favourite authors of the horror genre, Ray Bradbury, the book is called Something Wicked This Way Comes , taken from one of Shakespeare's novels.
I think it is a must read for any aspiring writer or for anyone for that matter. It Defeinitely is fast paced, interesting and very scary if you let your imagination run wild . The story is a description of two days in the life of Will and Jim, two thirteen year old boys who get more than they asked for in one October of their lives, when a carnival comes to their town at 3 AM.
The most striking aspect of the book is the adventure that is pumping in their bloods and they overcome many obstacles including defeating their fears since the owner of the carnival knows when they are afraid and feeds on that. I like the Carousel , which is like a time machine and if you ride it normally you get old by a year with every rotation and if you ride it in reverse you get younger. The concept is very neat and i like the fact that the plot is built better than the characters , for example the lightning rod salesman is a character who could have gotten more ink or he could have a little more to do in the story. Charles Halloway is Will's dad and his secret desire to grow young is very obvious throughout but he fights the feeling and that made so much sense in the end. He is a character inspired by Author's Dad and Ray has emotinally accepted this fact many times, he Says it is a tribute in some way to his dad. Another interesting fact about Ray Leonard is that he started writing after meeting some Freak called Mr.Electrico(Cooger becomes Mr.electrico in the book), who told him the secret to be eternal and Ray never stopped writing after that.
When they defeat the freaks in the end all they do is sing and dance and smile coz that makes the freaks weaker an weaker. They rescue Jim's soul and When Charles says he is afraid they will end up like the Illustrated Man if they use the Carousel even once, God that was intense.
Horror is a genre that is very knew to me and i'm definitely interested in writing a book like this and will surely do in a year or two I've begun my research on writing and started reading Stephen King, Lovecraft and now Ray Bradbury. Some John Wydham books which i will want to finish next week but if anybody has any suggestions , please let me know.
