Revisiting the Joy of Christmas
posted October 22, 2009 - 10:01pm
I recently read an article that suggested that with the slow economic recovery this Christmas could be even less joyous than last for many middle class families. The reason sited was that spending again this year will have to be curtailed.
I found myself wondering why having less presents under the Christmas tree should make for a less joyous holiday. Sure gifts are great and we all love them, but is giving and getting gifts really what Christmas is all about? If so, perhaps we need to take a step back in time and rediscover some old traditions while inexpensive brought deep meaning to this holiday season and joy to those who participated.
Christmas Caroling
Almost every community has some kind of Carol sing for the Christmas holidays. If you have never gathered with your neighbors and friends for one of these events you may be pleasantly surprised how much fun a Carol sing can be.
In my town they gather around the Christmas tree in a downtown parking lot, in other near by towns they gather in local parks. These Carol sings can last from an hour to two and often end with the Carolers consuming vats of hot chocolate or warm apple cider, while reconnecting with neighbors and just generally having a good time.
Sledding and Ice Skating Parties
If your community doesn't offer a sledding or Ice skating party why not gather a few neighbors and hold your own party. The entire family can come along and even grandma might be convinced to show off her girlhood talent for skating, or take a turn on a run down a hill.
No sled? Why not take a tube along, it makes for some interesting rides.
See the Lights
When I was growing up, one of the best parts of Christmas was when my mother would pile all of us kids in the car and we would ride around and look at all the houses and businesses decorated and lit up for Christmas.
There's nothing like twinkling lights and mini scenes to give the holiday a magical feel.
Have a Family Game Night
Why not break out some Christmas cookies and some of the old board games that are gathering dust in your closet and have an old fashion family game night. It can provide a nice activity for after trimming the tree or is a great way to enjoy a quiet weekend night just before Christmas with your family.
Be Grateful for What You Do Have
Take a few moments to think of all the people who have less than you do this Christmas. You might even want to write a letter to a solider overseas, or to a local hospital thanking the people who will be working on Christmas day and day to make your life better while you are enjoying the day with family or friends.
Thinking of those who have less, in a great way to be truly thankful for what you do have and to remind you that there are far worse things than having a few less gifts under the Christmas tree.

Great one!
Sounds like I'll be in the Christmas spirit early. I also love to pile everyone in the car and just ride and ride and enjoy the timeless beauty of all the beautiful lights. A great article Martie.
How Wonderful!
What a trip down memory lane. Undfortunately here in Tucson we don't go out at night because of all the drive-by shootings. The sledding is definitely out, we very rarely have snow. I do however just after dark go in my car and drive aroung looking at the lights. I do it early as later is too scary here. I had wonderful Christmases growing up in Long island though! I would love to do the caroling!
