Rewarding Irresponsible Behavior
Rewarding Irresponsible Behavior
There are many things that have worn so thin that when I see them I only grow
ever more annoyed that people swoon over it. What I have in mind is the antics of miscreants like Britney Spears. This complete screwup typifies what I mean. If she were just an ordinary person she would be either in a detention center or a mental ward, instead she gets away with everything with no more than a trifle of inconvenience, then the public oohs and ahhs over her “plight” and pass out over the mere glimpse of her as she is whisked away by her body guards, lawyers, and psychiatrists. Then her handlers concoct a story that she is actually bi-polar or has multiple personality disorder in an attempt to drum up sympathy for her …and it works every time. I predict that she will follow this scenario which has become such an old playbook that I am amazed that I am the only one who apparently sees through it.
I submit that she will take a few months out of the limelight only to emerge “a better person” by virtue of her getting religion or finding a deeper meaning of life through some epiphany that she will swear to devote the rest of her life to. And the dopey public will fall for it hook, line, and sinker and make her vastly richer than ever and lavish upon her more attention, books and movies will ensue and she will have completed the circuit of bilking the public…only I have no sympathy for the public either as their gullibility brings them what they deserve.
I now segue over to a related gripe of mine that revolves around the recent hooker scandals with elected officials. Again we deserve these people because so few of us insist on a better quality of leadership. But the ones who will come away smelling like a rose will be the much celebrated hookers. They will each get modeling contracts, acting offers, book and movie deals, go on the lecture circuit and gain more notoriety than they ever dreamed of. This will allow them to go legit and live very nicely and also attain much notoriety with the glitterati and become much celebrated and venerated. And all because they were high priced hookers who were lucky enough to draw high placed politicians as clients.
So I guess the message might be that you too can get rich quick and retire young if you follow this prescription and become a screwup and tramp. The only trick is getting yourself noticed.
I agree with you that there is far too much attention given to and too much willingness to gloss over critical flaws of public figures these days (Spitzergate and his hooker-turned-media darling comes to mind), including Britney Spears.
I can also see the other side of the coin--the unceasing and invasive paparazzi attention given to her, which also denies her a minute's rest out of the public eye, must surely have weighed on her. By all accounts, she was a sweet, wholesome child and young teen. It was after the white-hot spotlight of the media's attention was shone on her that she began to unravel.
I guess the moral of her story is doing things and pursuing a career that keeps a person in the public eye is making a deal with the devil. He may not come to claim his reward today or tomorrow, but he will get what he wants in the end.
What further exacerbates the proble is that they are so stupid that thay don't think about the fact that they are in a goldfish bowl and every little movement will be blown out of proportion. I have no pity for them.

they deserve every thing they get. their sheltered and elite lives make them think they are different from the rest of us (or better than the rest of us) but they actually are so arrogant and idiotic that they never learn to at least stay out of the limelight...and then too some do it deliberately to keep themselves in the limelight. No sympathy for them at all.
By the way, it is now Dr., Dr., Dr. (Ph.D., D.Sc., and Th.D.) but only in Europe do they practice that sort of redundancy. It's all just bragging rights anyway.
Dr. Andy
I cannot say that you are wrong. I cannot really find some form of pity for Britney BUT I'd say you were really personal with your gripe.
Celebrities do have a certain weigh of responsibility on their shoulders by virtue of their high level of influence on the 'gullible' public yet it would seem that it is this same weigh that they tend to crumble under.
Most of the ills we see being committed by our stars, celebs and leaders are in actual fact everyday sins of even the most common man but then again the common man is not on the spotlight so he gets away with being tagged 'crazy'!
I'd like to save a little sympathy for the erring stars...

"now segue over to a related gripe of mine that revolves around the recent hooker scandals with elected officials. Again we deserve these people because so few of us insist on a better quality of leadership"
I don't see the logical link between quality of political leadership and who a particular person has slept with. Does paying for sex make you bad politician? Was Clinton a bad politician? This assumption is based on emotion and not logic.I'm not american but the first impression I get from the modern american political system and election process is that it's focused on individual people and leader figures rather than true political ideas. The media runs the show, and politicians are comparable to any other trashy reality celebrity in the way they are portrayed in media. I agree with you though, you get the leaders you deserve. About, the election, I think you deserve better than what you got now! even if in reality you only have two options, bad and worse, democrats and republicans that is. Why is politics in America
so polarized? where I come from we have about five parties to vote for that each has a realistic chance of winning the election, on their own or through coalitions. Any thoughts on that?
The point is that public figures who get themselves into these situations are either complete idiots or contemptuous of the public over their own self gratification. Firstly, they know people with cameras and tape recorders are lurking behind every tree waiting to score a big story about their antics. the Britney Spears of the world are indeed young idiots who likely will not live much past 30 given their self deestructiveness and their obsession with their own extremes.
Clinton was a rotten politician but because he is "Slick Willy" he got away with it. Finally he has sabotaged his own legend and legacy as well as his wife's career. Long overdue.
the problem with the multi party system is that you never have a consensus. You spend your time making deals and forming alliances more than you do getting things done. Over here every time a strong third candidate has arisen all they did was help elect the worst of the three choices.
I agree. They remind me of spoiled little children. I have also noticed that when there are not as many paparazzi hiding around each corner and they feel "neglected" you can count on an "episode" in order to get attention for a while. The episodes get more spectacular as everybody gets bored of the same old same old and eventually the only way to get the fans back is to go to "celebrity rehab" or some "reality" show meant for washed up "stars" who want to get back into the limelight. +1

When I was growing up during the 50's and the 60's, if a celebrity did the things that Britney Spears back then, her career would be over and she would probably never work in hollywood or anywhere else again.
Elizabeth Taylor, a famous movie actress of the 40's, 50's and 60's was highly critized for her many scandals that envolved her many marriages and an affair with Eddie Fisher, that caused the break up of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher's
marriage. That was a very big deal back them.
But with today's moral standards so low what do you expect?
