Riverfront Park - Spokane, Washington
Riverfront Park - Spokane, Washington
It is one of the most beautiful and fun parks in the northwest. Located in Spokane, Washington - Riverfront Park has over 100 acres of natural and man made beauty in down town Spokane right along the Spokane River. Located at 507 N. Howard St., Spokane, Wa. Or you can call 1-509-625-6600 for information. If you want to see a little about the park before you visit it you can go online to www.spokaneriverfrontpark.com. This site will give you a list of events happening at the park on any given weekend through the summer.
The park has several nature walks in the area. You can follow the path’s to the Lilac Garden and on to the Viet Nam Memorial. If you continue your stroll you will find small area’s like the Japanese garden and the small forest of natural and native plants on display. Trees are everywhere for shade and the grass is soft to the touch for comfort and relaxation.
But the park also offers fun in so many other ways. It is famous for its Big Red Wagon and it is really big. Made of stolid steel and looking just like the red wagon of your childhood this one measures 12×12x27 feet! It can hold up to 300 people. There is a ladder at the back of the wagon you or the children can climb up and have their picture taken or just look over the rest of the park.
You’ll also want to check out the large screen IMAX theater. It is one of the best I have ever been in and nothing can compare to the sound and sight for reality when the movie starts. They feature everything from nature films to the newest “Batman” movie. Get there early because it can fill up quick when a great movie hit’s the screen.
Take your kids on the 1909 Looff Carrousel. With hand craved horses and animals from the days of old you can spin through time for fun and the memories of a childhood long past. It is a great way to introduce your own children to carrousels from another period and the fun you can have. Don’t forget the romance while riding in one of the bench seats for lovers.
You can take a ride on the Skyride which is a gondola ride about 10 minutes over the small Spokane falls right in town. Then move on to the Ferris wheel, tilt-a-whirl and other rides of carnivals in an up dated and beautiful décor. When you have finished the rides and need a little less activity you can have a round of miniature golf at the “Enchanted Forest” 9 or 18 hole golf course.
Events happen every weekend from music to running to markets of all kinds. You can ride the 40 minute touring train through the park giving you a view of every thing from the river to the 3 story clock tower. The clock tower is a beautiful center piece to the park. It is wound by hand once a week by personnel with a love of it’s history. You can see the park from the highway and you have several exits to choose from. Just follow the signs and it will take right to any one of it’s five parking areas. You’ll love this beautiful park summer and winter. It is a fantasy of fun for everyone of any age.
