Robby Benson, From Teen Actor to Accomplished Director
posted March 16, 2008 - 1:26amLots of hot teen actors have a quick rise to success and then fade out, but not Robby Benson. Benson became known as the young heartthrob star of the ice skating film "Ice Castles" and of "Ode to Billy Joe" in the mid 1970s. He later co-starred with the legendary Rod Steiger in the film adaptation of the classic Chaim Potok novel, "The Chosen," about two Jewish boys from different worlds becoming friends in 1940s Brooklyn.
Teen dramas were only the beginning for Robby Benson, however. Now 52 years old, he has acted on Broadway and directed films as well as more than 100 TV episodes, including episodes of Friends, Sabrina, and a whole season of Ellen. Benson was also the voice of the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast movie.
You can learn about his other work (including a novel) at his official Web site, http://robbybenson.net/. And of course he has a MySpace page, www.myspace.com/robbybenson1, which has a number of film clips from his movies.
Robby Benson has been doing more directing than acting in recent years, although he did play a professor in a number of episodes of the TV show American Dream. Which is appropriate, since Benson has himself been teaching for a number of years. He is now a visiting professor at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
