New York City will have a permanent outpost of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later this year. It was announced today at a press conference that an annex of Cleveland's famous musical museum will open in November in the SoHo area of Manhattan.

Among the memorabilia that will be on display will be some items with a distinctly local flavor: Bruce Springsteen's first car (a 1957 Chevy convertible) and a phone booth from the legendary (but now defunct) birthplace of punk rock, CBGB.

Billy Joel, the native Long Islander who recently played the last concerts ever to be performed at Shea Stadium in Queens, said he approved of the idea.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is planning to open annexes in other cities around the world, it said.
