Running on a treadmill vs. running outdoors

Running on a treadmill vs. running outdoors

Most police departments will tell potential recruits to practice running on real terrain instead of on a treadmill. This is because running on terra firma is much different than running on the treadmill. I have a treadmill and it is much easier to run on than real ground.

I would say that with the treadmill you get barely half of the real work out you would get from running on a trail. Granted, running on a treadmill does have its advantages. You can run indoors in your pajamas and in all weather conditions since you are oblivious to outside weather. With a treadmill you're less likely to be assaulted by a neighbor's dog or to be hit by a car.

Treadmills are good for recuperation and for general exercise. Real running should take place for more serious exercise and of course for training for marathons. Runners can use treadmills and trails together to achieve their optimum running state.

What you wear on your feet is important, too.

The sports shoe industry is thriving, there is no doubt about it. There is a shoe for practically every activity (and inactivity) imaginable. But, for people who have to be physically active as part of their job (police, security, military), there is an additional consideration. If you wear specialized shoes or boots in your job, you also need to train in them. It seems counter-intuitive at first, but consider that a policeman chasing a suspect down an alley is not going to be able to switch to tennis shoes before he gives chase. A soldier cannot switch to tennis shoes before he runs up a hill in battle. I'm not saying that running or cross-training shoes are bad, but there has to be some thought given to the application or purpose of the training.

There's also the advantage of sunlight

I read a report recently that compared the amount of Vitamin D that can be produced by our bodies with just a few minutes outside in the sunlight versus trying to supplement only with vitamins. Being out in the sunlight was far superior. Here is a very illuminating article on the importance of sunlight: Vitamin D myths, facts and statistics
