Russia, Georgia On the Verge of War Over South Ossetia
posted August 8, 2008 - 9:51amOn the day of the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, a war has erupted between Russia and the former Soviet republic of Georgia. The conflict centers on South Ossetia, a breakaway region of Georgia that declared its independence from Georgia in the early 1990s, but that has not been recognized internationally.
TV has shown Russian tanks and troops moving toward the Georgian border; Georgia claims it has shot down two Russian military planes. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has told CNN that his country is "under attack."
Russia claims that Georgia started the current conflict by killing several Russian peacekeeping troops in a border area.
Since gaining independence, the former Soviet republic of Georgia has annoyed Russia with its pro-Western stance.
