Russian Tennis Star Anna Chakvetadze Unharmed in Home Robbery
posted December 18, 2007 - 9:16pmBeing a wealthy and high-profile athlete can be dangerous to your health in today's Russia. 20-year-old Russian tennis star Anna Chakvetadze emerged unharmed when several men broke into her home in Moscow early Tuesday and stole about $200,000 worth of belongings.
As many as six masked men climbed over a a fence at a country house where Anna Chakvetadze was staying, and tied her parents up while taking money and valuables.
Her father Jamal Chakvetadze was shown on TV in Russia, with bruises on his face. He says the robbers beat him with their hands or a gun, but that daughter Anna Chakvetadze, though tied up, was not harmed.
Moscow police are looking for suspects in the robbery at the home of Chakvetadze, winner of four singles titles this year on the women's WTA Tour. Her earnings from tennis this year are more than $1.4 million, and she is ranked Number 6 in the world in women's singles.
She reached a career-high ranking for Number 5 in September after reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament this summer, her best showing at the Grand Slam tennis tournament in New York City.
Anna Chakvetadze has a record of 59-20 this year.
