Ryan Alexander Jenkins (murder suspect) has raised reality TV questions (Updated 8-22-09)

This article by AP reporter DERRIK J. LANG takes an in-depth look into how reality-based TV shows conduct background checks and where liability falls when things-go-wrong.

The production company of VH1's "Megan Wants a Millionaire," 51-Minds has issued an official statement about contestant Ryan Jenkins who, now, has been charged in the murder of model Jasmine Fiore, and the mutilation of her body.  Jenkins is accused, additionally, of cutting her fingers off and ripping all her teeth out.

His vehicle and boat trailer were found near Port Angeles, Washington, and a person matching his description is said to have taken a ferry to Point Roberts, Washington - located in quite the odd-ball location. Point Roberts, WA, is accessable only through Canada by car, although ferry-access from the Washington mainland is available.  He then walked into Canada.  He is a citizen of Canada.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police have urged Jenkins to turn himself in peacefully.  They said he may be carrying a handgun.

"(Producers) are responsible," said veteran reality TV producer Scott Sternberg. "If we're being given the opportunity by a network who's going to pay us for our work as producers because they trust us, then we've got to do everything we can to do the work appropriately and securely. I think this is a big wake-up call for all of us reality producers."
