Sailing

If you watched the recently released documentary, "Who killed the electric car?" then you will understand the premise for the script I am writing, entitled, "Who killed ocean sailing?"

In "Who killed the electric car?" the movie discusses General Motor's release and then hording of electric cars. They look at the culprits behind the "failure" of a car that so many people seemed to want.

Sailing is another transportation-related industry that has taken a dive--thanks to horrifying movies like "Jaws" and the fact that every elementary curriculum spends at least one week discussing the Titantic(we can put Leo's movie next to Jaws as well). People are scared of the ocean and sharks. These movies have had a residual effect on the American pyche and it will take a lot of work or at least three generations to undo the damage.

I have to admit that I am more deeply involved in sailing than the average Joette, since my fiancee owns a sailing business on the Monterey, California wharf. He has great stories about all the shark questions he receives and how he has to coax some passengers into giving up their fear of the ocean just to have a little fun.

Sailing is an energy efficient transportation method for exploring the ocean. I hope "Pirates of the Carribean" sparks the pirate in more people.

If you want to try sailing in Monterey, visit www.montereysailing.com and Capt. Dutch will help you out.
