Sarah Palin and Her Family Values: The Soap that Keeps on Bubbling

Is the 2008 Republican presidential campaign straight out of a soap opera or what?

Now we have a new plot twist and a golden opportunity for holier-than-thou-ing on the part of the Evanjellies. Just days after they got pumped up by John McCain’s “brilliant” choice of running mate—Rookie Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, a pious pro-lifer with five kids under her belt to prove it, including a Down syndrome baby born in April, their bubble has been pricked but hardly deflated. First, the April arrival, Trig, had been rumored to secretly be her 17-year-old unmarried daughter Bristol’s child. But Palin tried to deflect that nasty gossip by announcing today that Bristol will have her own baby in December.

Well, that’s a relief, huh? And, commented Palin, by God, she’s going to learn how hard it is to take care of a child. So I guess that’s Bristol’s punishment for doing what comes natural with her boyfriend without using contraceptives, thanks to her parents’ impeccable “family values”. Yeah, that’ll teach ‘er!

That the Republican Veep candidate has a teenage daughter who engages in premarital sex (a no-no for the Rapture Right but perfectly normal for most anyone else) apparently without benefit of birth control and sex education (because that would be evil, according to the Rapture Right) is not exactly a shocker. And not surprisingly, Bristol’s parents have stated that not only will she raise the child, but she will also marry the father (a yes-yes and standing ovation from the Rapture Right).

So what’s the lesson here? That abstinence from and ignorance about sex is always the best policy with a horny, curious kid, and if you don’t succeed with that losing strategy and your kid “sins” anyway, she’s obligated to continue the pregnancy and keep the baby? Poor Bristol, trapped in such a self-righteous family. She has my sympathy. The world really needs more unwanted children and shotgun marriages.

And has anyone considered who’s going to have enough time to help raise the two Palin family additions, should the Republicans happen to win the election? It can’t be Sarah—she’ll be too busy learning about national security and all the other important issues she has no clue about as the second-in-command to the leader of the free world. Hmmm . . .

As if Babygate weren’t enough to give Karl Rove migraines, Governor Palin also has the weight of Troopergate hanging over her pretty little head. That, in brief, involves her firing of Alaska public safety commissioner Walt Monegan allegedly because he had refused to fire Mike Wooten, an estranged ex-brother-in-law of hers who works as a state trooper—and with a few subplots thrown into the mix, as with all soaps.

But you couldn’t make this stuff up.

Idlewild, that's not the question to ask

But I'll try to answer it anyway. From what I've heard about Obama's mother, she was loving if a bit flaky (she didn't stay with his father long, which is officially attributed to the fact that interracial couples had a hard time of it in those days, but who knows). She married the Indonesian after the Kenyan and Barack ended up in Indonesia for a few years, but from what I understand, the rest of his youth was spent mainly with his grandparents in Honolulu--who might have been the positive and stable influences in his life, rather than his mother. I don't know about that either. So did Barack become the man he is today because of, or despite, his teenage mother's influence? Is he the unique, inspiring person he is now because he's lived in so many different places and has an exotic pedigree? Who knows? Some kids do just fine no matter what kind of crazy childhood they have and who raises them, and others crash and burn. But surely you're not advocating that teenagers follow the example of Bristol and Levi and start producing babies at that age? They are far from being role models for their peers, and I certainly hope they don't engender some kind of bizarre copycat trend among teen girls to get knocked up by their boyfriends and pop out babies. (Informed, responsible, protected) sex at that age is one thing, but parenthood is quite another. But, to return to your question, whether a kid raised by kids will turn out well is not the point. In a world already vastly overpopulated with humans, the last thing it needs is thoughtless, irresponsible parents like the Palins hypocritically looking the other way while their kids have sex without making it clear that babies can happen if they're not careful, and after the damage has been done, making patronizing noises about how the kids "sinned" but hey, they'll be big enough to accept them and their baby in their family anyway. That's just plain brainless, and there's no excuse for it. BTW, I watched some of Soon-To-Be Grandma Palin's speech tonight and I was not impressed. She's not likeable. Determined and sarcastic, yes! And I thought it was in very bad taste to have poor Bristol and Levi displayed up there like it's a great thing they're doing and it's just one big happy family. I don't buy it.

Teens

"While there are a few unusually mature teens out there, in general they are very poor candidates for parenthood because they're still kids themselves." Would you consider Obama's mother to have been a poor candidate for parenthood? She was 18 when Barack was born. After some anger and drug experimentation, he seems to have turned out OK.

Yep, Idlewild, exactly, teens do change their minds

from day to day, and often from minute to minute, because they're too young, immature and inexperienced to have a clue what they want in life. While there are a few unusually mature teens out there, in general they are very poor candidates for parenthood because they're still kids themselves. Tonight's convention will be interesting. Bookies are betting even odds that McCain will dump Palin. Too much questionable stuff in her past, and not just the family soap opera. The vetting process was clearly pretty poor. If he keeps her on the ticket, it's pretty much a certainty that Obama will win. So I'm kind of hoping she'll remain.

Eggsovary, you're a loyal right winger, which is fine,

But happiness is hardly the word I'd use for Bristol's situation. Babies should come because they're wanted and planned for, not out of ignorance. There are already SIX BILLION HUMANS on this planet. We hardly need more babies! From both an environmental and ethical standpoint, this is unhappy news. Sarah and her husband failed at parenting because they haven't taught their kids what every kid should learn about BEFORE puberty: the good, the bad and the ugly about sex. Sex is a powerful force in life, and the result of ignorance about sex is often an unwanted baby. Just telling kids to be abstinent is hardly sex education. Whether the Palins are making the appropriate political noises that they're thrilled about Bristol's baby because "Sarahcuda" wants to be Vice President and clearly puts her family in second place when it comes to her ambitions, I am quite certain that if they had a choice, they would much rather Bristol were not preggers.

Levi Johnston

One article I read said that Johnston's MySpace page hadn't been "accessed"/updated for almost a year. So the comment that he didn't want kids was presumably posted around a year ago. Who knows, maybe his thoughts and priorities have changed since then, especially considering how often teens can change their minds.

Mandalorianarmy, what a depressing thought

McCain has a history of dumping his first wife when she was ill with cancer, so anything is possible with that bunch.

Mrbronco, I feel sorry for Bristol

and enraged at Sarah. What kind of family values are these? Ignorance is bliss?

Kjhack, amen.

And you know that whatever is thrown at the RR, they'll spin it to suit their needs, and so now they act like they're thrilled about this poor kid's baby. Right now their need is to have an Evanjelly in the White House to promote their anti-choice, anti-family values (to my mind) agenda.

Happy situation?!

What's the happy situation: an illegitimate pregnancy that could have been prevented with sex education and birth control, which Sarah is against--not to mention a shotgun marriage? I understand the father, Levi, doesn't even want kids. What kind of marriage (if it even happens) will that be?

Be back later

I've been missing comments again, which is apparently due to some glitch in the system that Nick is rectifying, so I just discovered this treasure trove of your opinions. Just wanted you to know I'm not ignoring you, but I have to go now and psych myself up for some much-anticipated (not) dental work this morning.
