Scotch Whiskey: 12 Years
posted November 28, 2008 - 7:30pm12 is a magical number when it comes to scotch whiskey. 12 is the average number of years that a whiskey has had to grow to its full body before drinking. A whiskey that has aged this long is not always easy to come by, but in most stores, can be found. Anything that is older than this, is not going to be nearly as easy nor cost efficient. An old bottle of scotch though, is one of the most treasured possessions a person can find or ask for.
Older scotch is meant to be more warm and full. When drinking it, it is meant to have a more full flavored appeal to it unlike anything that anyone else has ever tried. Every drink of scotch whiskey is different and will have a different taste, but the older that it is, the better the kick and lasting impression it is supposed to have on it's drinker.
A younger scotch is usually not going to be anywhere near as smooth. it is going to be very hard to drink and hard to swallow. Of course, this may be the suited type of drink for some heavy drinkers, but for those who are looking for a great taste and great drinking experience that will give you a lasting impression like none other, an older style scotch is going to be for you.
The magic number is always going to be twelve years. Anything different than this will not give you optimal results when brewing or drinking whiskey. Try to find a bottle that is young and that is old and then sit down and do some comparing. You will be able to tell right away the immediate differences. You will be in a whole new world when it comes to drinking and you will have advanced from an amateur scotch drinker to a professional, full bodied, fledgling.
How this happens is when the scotch sits in the casks, it matures over time and the product becomes better and more refined. The alcohol level is supposed to lessen for every year that it sits. Usually what happens when the rye sits in these casks is they develop a vanilla taste that blends into the whiskey transforming its texture and blend creating a full bodied flavor that nothing else can compare to. This is how the scotch whiskey is developed and continues to be developed over history. Happy trails in your scotch drinking adventures.
