Senator Proposes National Speed Limit to Save Gas
posted July 5, 2008 - 1:10amOne of the most influential Republican senators wants Congress to consider reimposing a national speed limit. Senator John Warner of Virginia asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to look into what speed limit would provide optimal gasoline efficiency based on today's technology.
Back in 1974, Congress set a national 55 mile an hour speed limit because of the OPEC crisis. During that time, the country saved 167,000 barrels of oil a day. The speed limit was repealed in 1995. That's when crude oil dropped to $17 a barrel and gasoline was selling for $1.10 a gallon.
According to the Energy Department website, fuel efficiency decreases rapidly when driving faster than 60 mph. Every additional 5 mph over the 60 mph mark costs motorists an additional 30 cents per gallon in fuel costs.
