The Serpent (and I thought the trombone gets no respect)

The serpent is the bass instrument of the cornett family. As such, it predates the invention of keys and mechanics that would make it work acoustically.  It lasted a little longer than the cornett, but only because nothing else served its purpose. Numerous quotations from three centuries of musical experts show whatever good side it had and the general contempt of most of those who described it.
