Sheer Window Treatments: Perfect Curtains

Don’t let your grandma’s frumpy curtains keep you from exploring sheer curtains as a viable option for window décor.

Sheer window dressings have been popular for decades, and their quality and decorative appeal will help glamorize any living space.  When you think of sheer curtains, you might get a visual image of thin white lacy pieces of fabric that barely cover the window.  Of course these do exist, but high quality and well-designed sheer curtains are a better option.  With a few practical tips, you can maximize the overall appeal of your living space.

Tip One:  Sheer Doesn’t Mean White

Just like sheer pantyhose, sheer window treatments don’t have to be white.  In fact, white window treatments, whether sheer or not, are probably not the best option.  The color white is obviously a crisp, clean decorating color, but it can also get dingy.   Most window treatments tend to gather dust and dirt, so white curtains can often look dull or yellowish.  When you think of accessorizing a room with sheer window treatments, think color.   The color doesn’t have to be bold or dramatic, but it can provide a warm tone to the room.  Sheer window treatments often come in gold shades, green tones, and read hues that can brighten and bring life to any room.

Tip Two:  Sheer Doesn’t Mean Shiny

Sheer window treatments don’t have to look shiny.  The days of polyester and nylon sheer curtains have transformed into a new era.  Sheer window accessories can be made with cotton, linen, and rayon.  These fabrics create the open and airy feel without the shiny and translucent effect that often accompanies sheer curtains.  Sheer, cotton window treatments are practical because they can be washed easily and don’t usually need to be ironed.  In addition, cotton and linen fabrics offer a more casual element to a living space.  Polyester, nylon, and rayon fabrics tend to create a more formal living area.

Tip Three:  Sheer Doesn’t Mean Plain

If you enjoy a zesty pattern or lively design, sheer curtains can be purchased with this in mind.  Often, sheer curtains have a slightly embossed design, so they offer character to a living space.  In addition, hard ware and vibrant curtain ties can add a flare for the dramatic to embellish a sheer window treatment.  If you enjoy adding a creative element to your style, you can twist and tie sheer curtains to achieve a highly polished look to your room.  This festive strategy can keep your sheer curtains from looking plain or boring.

If you remember that sheer curtains can be a valuable window accessory, you can obtain a living space that is open and airy without being old-fashioned and ordinary.
