Shocked by Lightning
posted October 28, 2009 - 3:21pmI have been shocked is what I told my brother when he asked me what was my problem.
I didn't know how I got shocked, but I knew that I had and thought the cow somehow had too.
It wasn't like we had electricity in
our old barn when we were growing up.
We were out there milking the cows one night just as we did every other night.
The difference was that this night there was an electrical storm going on all around us.
Suddenly not far away a bolt of lightning flashed through the late evening sky.
Our usual milking time was from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, but this night it was nearer 7:00 p.m. possibly even a little after.
The reason for this is we had just gotten home.
When the lightning bolt flashed, the cow looked at me kind of strange for a minute then kicked the bucket and jumped about two feet forward.
The commotion she was causing is why Lyle asked me, "What is your problem?" A tingling feeling ran around my neck and into my chest.
It also ran down my left arm and I feel quite sure that it didn't stop with me but continued on into the teats of that cow from the way that she acted.
After getting myself calmed down I tried to settle the cow down so that I could finish milking her. I didn't expect her to give much milk that night after our experience, still I had to try.
No way was she going to let me milk her that night, I couldn't even get close to her.
My brother had to milk her that night and the next one as well.
Actually, he had to milk her for about two months while I took over milking one of his.
About two months later she began trusting me enough that I could milk her again.
Until then I didn't stand a chance and for about a week I couldn't even get close to her.
The next day on the way to school we saw a tree near the road and not far from our barn that had been struck by lightning bad enough that nothing was left but a stack of splinters.
I assume that is when the cow and I got shocked the night before.
Dad named all our cows or let us kids name them, but it has been so long now that I can't remember which cow this happened too only that it did happen, and it is a true story.

Thanks Nancy!
There was a 17 year old on his way to school about a year or two ago in Conway which is about 13 miles from here that got killed by lightning. Strange that it didn't hit the tree or church steeple that was nearby rather than him as both were so much taller, but it chose him instead. Our preacher knew him. I didn't even know of him until the day the lightning got him.

Wow, I feel bad for the cow,
Wow, I feel bad for the cow, too! You both were lucky. I know a guy that took a hit and the lightening blew a hole on his hand!
