Should gay babies be fixed in the womb?

Should gay babies be fixed in the womb?

Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., the president of the leading Southern Baptist seminary has recently made some bold statements that have homosexuals and conservative Christians steaming mad. Rev. Mohler poses the following question in his blog, “What if you could know that your unborn baby boy is likely to be sexually attracted to other boys? Beyond that, what if hormonal treatments could change the baby's orientation to heterosexual? Would you do it? Some scientists believe that such developments are just around the corner.” He goes on to suggest that a genetic marker for homosexuality should be sought so Christian parents can fix their defective children in the womb.

“Why should Christian parents fix their defective children in the womb; because homosexuality is a sin?” “But if homosexuality is a genetic trait, and a sin, then does giving birth to a homosexual child a sin?” “Will all good Christians feel obliged to ‘fix’ these unborn children that will certainly bring disgrace on the family?” “These are the thoughts that swirl though this conservative Christians brain.” Rev. Mohler’s article has spurred much criticism and questions from all sides of the debate. See his blog link at the bottom of this article.

Dr. Mohler follows up this post a few days later with “Was it something I said?” In his rebuttal to the backlash on his article, he says the following: “My purpose in writing my previous article was, in the main, to draw attention to a very real threat to human dignity that lurks as a possibility on our horizon… This is the possibility that, if a biological marker (real or not) is ever claimed to mark homosexuality in prenatal testing, widespread abortion of such babies might well follow…” I guess to prevent the abortions, which by the way are also as in, that the child should be fixed instead.

Whether we agree or disagree with the Reverend on his views about rectifying homosexuality in babies or otherwise, as citizens we need to be familiar about what influential are saying about subjects as serious as tampering with babies in the womb. Go to Dr. Mohler’s blog and read the statements for yourself. While you are there, leave a comment or two. He asks that those who disagree and agree with him keep the comments coming. He believes that he (and probably the public as well) will learn something from this ongoing debate.

So, if you could change your baby’s sexual orientation in the womb so they would not be gay, would you? In addition, if this were possible, how many people might actually want to do the opposite?
