Should I Redeem my Televison Converter Box Coupon?
Should I Redeem my Televison Converter Box Coupon?
With television going strictly digital in February 2009, I recently signed up for and received a government coupon worth $40 for the purchase of a converter box. This box is supposed to allow my tv to continue receiving programming after the switch-over.
Here's my dilemma. I'm not really sure if the coupon is worth redeeming. I do have some favorite shows that I like to watch but I really wouldn't miss them too terribly if they were gone. Besides, most tv programs can be downloaded off the internet at my convenience.
Another good argument for letting my tv die its slow, analog death is my kids. Even with me and my husband monitoring the programs our kids watch, they still see adult content when they shouldn't. Programs that suggest parental guidance are on earlier now, not like back in the day when Dynasty and Melrose Place wouldn't air before 10:00 PM (gasp!).
So I'm counting down these last 30 days before the coupon expires and I'll probably wait until the very last moment for making a decision. Hmmmmmm....

Reasons to redeem the coupon:
Let's begin with your worst fear, adult content. I always hear all these comments and concerns regarding "children seeing or accessing adult content.
Believe it or not, they're going to see, at some point, adult content whether you like it or not. Kids will come in contact with such content voluntarily, or not. It's the content of many things, parents fear, where their kids are shown these things by other kids. And, like it or not, its a social-thing amongst kids to check-out stuff Mom and Dad try to stop.
To prohibit television is to prohibit the use of one of the greatest invention, and world-knowledge devices ever brought to humankind. Television has changed the world. It has made us more aware of our neighbors, the downsides, and their successes, their sadness, and their joy.
It is the window of the world.
And, you might kill off your TVs, but, I'm sure your neighbor's will not follow your lead. If you're going to kill off you TV, kill off your neighbors too. In, fact, it might be better for you and your family to move into a cave in the a wilderness area, or find an island, void of communications signals. I hear they're selling old missile silos up in Montana -- you might want to move there, down deep in the earth, where signal will not reach you.
Come, on, BREATHE! Your kids will be better for having the experience. It's always better to be exposed to the OH-NOs,
Mom and Dad fear, at home, than with one of your kid's friends.
Being open with your children, is better than being closed.
Talking with your children, is better than filtering content.
And, if you do choose to not make the conversion to digital, hey, you can use your old TVS for planters, maybe, make a new wave pair of shoes, one's with little screens on them - they'd be vintage, right?
And, if you want to get a feel for what things will be like after the big digital change, the City of Wilmington, N.C., is one of America's Test Cities.
Wilmington, N.C., will go all digital beginning at midnight on September 8, 2008. Here is a link to the story:

Those are good points to consider
before I let the coupon expire. I just think that 90% of the stuff on tv is junk and I could be doing more productive things with my free time. Thanks for your comments Bigpink!!

So, Mia, let it expire...
because by the time the big-switch takes place the price of digital TVs will be cheap. They're already pretty cheap, but, my next year, they'll be really cheap.
And, what's my opinion of Television?
I don't even own one. My house is void of television. There's nothing on it. And, ya, know what makes it, so, weird?
I sit on a committee, which was created in 2000, to further the knowledge about the man who invented the device named Television. He came up with the idea on a potato field in Rigby, Idaho, in 1922, at the age of 14.
His name is Philo (Phil) T. Farnsworth, and, let me tell you what his wife communicated to us; Phil never permitted a television in his house when his kids were growing up. He died in 1971, and his, dear, wife, Pem, passed away last year.
If you'd like to check out how television came to be, because its a great American story, visit our National Website:

Let it expire?
Hey Bigpink, that's really cool about the committee and that you don't have a tv!!!!!!! What's the choice behind that? Are you downloading programs from the internet or just not watching shows? Your comments are always interesting so thanks again!

Television trash
I'm agree: TV is particular dangerous for children. As teacher, I've noticed that children without TV are better than children with. It is important to know HOW I can use TV: you cannot let your children watching TV just alone for hours!
My children use Internet or DVDs (with Mum!):-).
I love the invented device called Television, but,
television programming is pretty crappy, except PBS.
I have never been sucked into the pay-tv ideology. Why should I pay for something that use to be free?
There's only, for me, a handful of programs I actually like on free tv. The only show I ever got hooked into on pay-tv was the Sopranos, and I only watched a couple of episodes, and then watched it briefly for free on the Internet, and then joined Netflix when I couldn't get it there any more.
Hey, $4.99 a month to Netflix is a lot cheaper than paying some pay-tv company fifty ($50) or more dollars a month.
(This is similar to the same reason I tossed away the car, and I do have a driver's license.) Why would I want to give my money to someone I don't like. I give the money to myself, and, I have a lot more fun!
And the rest of my free-tv programs, I can watch them on the TV Network sites.
So, right, now, with old-technology analog, I don't need a TV. Broadcast TV went to hell along time ago, so, even before Internet sites, probably in 2002, maybe 03, I took my 32" Sanyo and threw it in the dumpster. I, remember my neighbor saying, "what are you doing? Can I have that TV?"
He may still have it, who knows...
But, television, under the command of the king, cable, is about ready to get a new king -- Digital Broadcast Television.
