Shrubs That Attract Birds
posted December 1, 2008 - 12:29amMost shrubs provide nice habitats and protection for birds. The following shrubs not only provide a lovely nesting or hiding environment, but also bear very beautiful fruits and flowers in different seasons.
Butterfly Bush

Originated in China, the Butterfly Bush is famous for its fragant and charming flowers that attract multitudes of birds and butterflies. The flowers grow in cluster on 6 – 12-inch-long spikes, and usually bloom in July and August. Its leaves are quite large and coarse in texture. Its growth habit is pretty wild and unruly, though autumn and fall pruning can keep it more manageable.
Darwin Barberry

The Darwin Barberry has showy yellow flowers that profusely bloom in March. Its dark blue berries are very pretty and also attract birds. Darwin Barberry has a rapid growth habit and should be pruned regularly otherwise the shrub will become much less dense in old age. This charming plant is a native to Chile.
Red Chokeberry

Native to Florida, Missouri and Texas, the Red Chokeberry is a care-free plant that can tolerate dry soil and drought very well. It can also be planted in wet areas and heavy soil, and is hardly troubled by pests. Red Chokeberry grows slowly 6 – 10 feet high with spectacular vivid red berries in profusion. In fall and winter, a large planting of chokeberries will picturesquely appear like an ocean of red.
