Silly Parents, Facebook is for Kids

Silly Parents, Facebook is for Kids

I always figured I'd be the last person on Earth to wind-up on Facebook, having never really cared much for online social communities of this sort. However, after receiving an invitation to sign-up a few weeks back, I decided to give a go. It did afford me an opportunity to reconnect with some old online friends with whom I'd lost touch. So far, oddly enough, I haven't had much luck locating the distant family members and old "real-world" friends I'd sought out. Go figure.

For those who weren't aware, Facebook was originally created by two computer science majors at Havard as a way for students to keep in touch. And in the beginning, it was limited to just Havard students. Now, there are over 175 million members worldwide. Much to my 20 year-old niece's dismay, my brother-in-law is one of them.

I'm learning such feelings are not too uncommon among students. I was chatting with a friend a couple of weeks back, and asked her if she had a Facebook account.

"No, my kids have forbidden me from signing up," she replied.

Now that I think about it, it seems my niece has strongly urged her mother to stay the hell away from that web site, as well. Sooner or later, though, the compulsion will be too overwhelming to ignore, as everyone and their friggin' pets wind up there, eventually.

Not having kids myself, I'm assuming the big issue here is that kids are afraid their parents will be checking up on what they're up to online. I haven't even remotely considered the idea of adding my niece -- seemed a peculiar notion, quite frankly.

Students can always just reject a friend request from a parent, I guess. But then they'll have some serious explaining to do on the next visit home.

Yikes!

What I did on MySpace

My oldest son has a MySpace and when he first started it, we talked over the concerns of such a site. About 6 months later, I got a MySpace account and asked to be added as a friend to my son as some unknown female. I am proud to say, he told me to get lost, he did not know who I was and would not add me. WooHoo!! I then came clean and told him I was proud that he is being careful. We also had a great laugh over his reply to my request! My brother did the same thing to his daughters, 3 of them. Only one of them did not add him. He is in law enforcement and had some serious talks with the girls after that. We can guide, but sometimes we do need to check up to see if the guidance has worked. Especially when it comes to the internet and safety. MJ - Sending happy thoughts!

Facebook et al

Facebook seems to be going strong and growing fast. But speaking of dinosaurs, anybody remember a few years back when Friendster was supposed to be the Next Big Thing? It's still around, but I don't know anyone who uses it.

Is FaceBook Going the Way of MySpace (&Yahoo & other Dinosaurs)?

I remember when I first joined Facebook, I had heard it was 'just for students.' (I was one at OCU at the time, and EVERYBODY remembers high school!) Now it's pretty-much for people in ANY condition (working in a company, suffering from an illness, living in a city, etc.) If you can ignore all the 'make money on facebook'-SPAM (which I might have helped the Spider enable just now :-D), you might look at it as a way to (through 'keeping up with your old connections') resurrect the happy times of your childhood ... which is what Never-Neverland's pirates did with the stuff their stolen treasure got them (i.e. Peter Pan syndrome). ---Joining Xomba FREE Helps Writers A LOT, but Google signs the checks for our writing about Buddhist Chant, Dr. Hot4Words, Happy Bounties~

This Article Could Provide a Great Way to Embarrass Kids...

Extract from a mother/daughter row: "If you don't clean your room, mommy will open a Facebook account..." OR Extract - a mother seeks her daughter's advice about an awful holiday snap of them "What do you think of this photo of us?... I'm thinking of putting it on Facebook" ...could be entertaining

On Facebook and Feedburner info

Yeah, I didn't really know about Facebook's beginnings until just recently, myself. Seems the oldies have really taken over. It took me awhile to figure out where to get the damn code for Feedburner, Joe. Looks like jdubhub lined it out pretty well in his comments. Hope you get it sorted out. :) ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

Facebook not just for kids anymore

An article in the NY Times last week notes that, "there was an estimated 276 percent increase in Facebook users ages 35-54 during the last six months of 2008, bringing their total to almost seven million." Revenge of the geezers (and geezers-to-be)! I guess Facebook users can expect to see more ads on the site for "ED" medications, AARP, and drugs for men who "always have to go." http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/15/magazine/15wwln-lede-t.html?src=SkimTE
