Simple Skincare Tips

The older I get the more I like to understand the ingredients listed on the back of my health and beauty products. It just makes more sense to know what I am plastering all over my skin, particularly with skin like mine, which breaks out at the slightest unpleasant breeze. Humans being reasonably organic creatures themselves, it follows that other natural materials are more nurturing for human skin than a bunch of lab-produced chemicals. I don’t know about you, but I have no idea what propylparabens, phthalates, or Sodium Lauryl Sulfates are.

My “keep it simple” philosophy does not stop at the ingredients in my health and beauty aids. I also try to use as few products as possible as infrequently as possible. There are three main reasons for this. First, I am a big fan of self-sufficiency. I have the tendency to think of scenarios such as: “If I get in my car today on my way to the grocery store and happen to take a wrong turn and wind up on some back country road and then my battery dies and there are no people around and I have so spend three nights in the woods, sleeping in a tree, will I have everything I need?” I like to think that I can keep myself quite comfortable in daily life with just some basic essentials so that, should this scenario ever present itself, I will handle it with grace and spirit rather than with…well, in this case…blotchy skin.

My second reason is that I am under the impression that the human body works marvelously well of its own accord and that it is built not only to be capable of standing harsh treatment, but also with a strength that allows it to thrive in the beautiful chaos of a life well spent. Thus, it seems like all my exterior body really needs is to be clean without being dehydrated - also, a regular good hard sweat (but I’ll get to that some other time).

My third reason is that I am not only unable to spend obscene amounts of money on toiletries, but also that I am unwilling to. If I were presented with a bottle of a brand new, all natural, miracle toner, worth $15, I would be most likely to sell the bottle of toner for $10 and go buy myself a book. Better yet, I’d take my $10 to a used bookstore and buy ten books. $10 could also buy me a rainbow roll at my favorite sushi joint. I’d use the three dollar bottle of rosewater in my fridge on my skin.

My reason for beginning this article strain (doubtless you are wondering by now) is borne of frustration. It always surprises me how online searches for natural, home skin care ideas result in advertisement after advertisement on commercial skincare products that are usually expensive and supposedly natural, but still not simple. In future articles, I would like to offer some tips on natural exfoliants, moisturizers, toners, oil reducers, and other skin remedies that have worked for me. If you have a philosophy similar to mine, or skin as temperamental as mine on which you have tried every product known to man and are hoping for something new, please stay tuned. I hope that some of the solutions I have found useful, through trial and error, an amazing mother and sister, and blurbs I have read here and there will be of some use or interest to somebody else.
