Skating is not all fun and game.

Skating is not all fun and game.

I am skating and things are going nice and slow. Then before I realize it I am going so fast beyond control. I am heading down a hill in one of the sidewalks which I had not know was there. I am going so fast, I had no time to react. I did think about the brake, but I was going so fast that the brake was useless. It screeched so loud, but did nothing. I realized that I am not only going down a hilly street, but also there is a very sharp turn that I have to go through. I started panicking and I knew I was in trouble. I had grass on my left side and some dust/mud on my right before the pavement.

I had not really paid attention to the grass on my left. For some reason it was blocked from my view. If I had paid attention to it, that would be a great way to solve this issue. However, I didn't really see it and I couldn't take a chance on the sharp turn because I would have sprained, if not broken my ankle. So in my panic I strained to the right in hope of stopping on the mud, but no, I could not stop. I ended up falling hands first on the street. No, no, I did not fall, I was sliding across the street.

No, this is not a nightmare that I had, this unfortunately is reality.

After my fall, one of the neighbors who had his garage open came running to help me. He was asking if my wrist is broken and that made me panic. My wrist broken??!!! I managed to stand up and started seeing if I can feel any parts of my body. I was barely able to move my right knee which had been damaged the most. The skin on my left hand was peeled and small stones were inside my skin. The heel of my right hand had many layers of skin peeled off. The first joint on my right thumb also had some layers peeled off. Last, but not least I could not move my left thumb and I assumed it was broken.

No, I am not kidding, I wish I were. That is really how much damage my skating accident did. I ended up going home, but I refused to go to the hospital. We treated my injures and they are healing up alright. Of course, my knee swelled within in hours after the accident and I was barely able to walk, but the swelling went down and so did the pain. That is after many pain killers of course.

My left palm has been heeling alright. Some of the stones are still in there, but it's drying and hopefully the stones will come out. My left thumb is sprained and still painful, but not broken as I had feared. I still can't move it to every position and I can't do full circles without pain, but I am assuming it's not broken. If the pain persists, I'll get it x-rayed as soon as I get back to NYC.

I had protection, but I was not wearing them at the time of the accident. So please, please learn from my mistake, wear protections even if you think you're a pro. I have been skating since I was about 11 and this has got to be the biggest accident I have gotten myself into.
