Small plane hits NYC apt. building; terrorism NOT suspected

Wed, Oct 11, 3:20pm:

A small commuter plane has crashed into a highrise apartment building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The FBI says that terrorism is NOT suspected, according to reports from CNN, 1010 WINS radio in New York City, and other sources.

The plane reportedly crashed about midway up or higher up in the 50-story building at East 72nd St. and York Ave., just a couple of blocks west of the East River. At least apartments are reported to be on fire, and firefights are working to fight a fire on the ground, caused by fuel from the plane splashing down.

With any luck, most of the building's residents are at work and not at home. And there are a number of hospitals within just a few blocks of the building.

The news stations haven't made any reports of injuries yet.

3:39pm: The building is a condo called the Belaire; its address is 524 E. 72nd Street. It has 183 apartments, and it has been reported that the lower 13 stories are medical offices.

NY Yankees pitcher probably killed in NYC small-plane crash

The plane was registered to Cory Lidle, a pitcher the Yankees acquired during this season. His passport was reportedly found on the ground at the site of the explosion.

Just realized I was there last week

Duh, I just put 2 and 2 together.. Belaire... no wonder it sounded familiar, I had lunch in the cafeteria on the ground floor last week. Along with condos the building contains guest facilities for patients of the Hospital for Special Surgery, as well as the hospital's sports medicine center and other services.

They're saying on CBS right

They're saying on CBS right now that it is, indeed, a fixed wing aircraft, not a helicopter. The building is attached to a hospital, and is a residential facility used from the 22nd floor and below for pateints, doctors, and families of patients. Above is regular residential homes. It's still on fire right now, and terrorism still is not suspected. The reports are all showing crowds of people taking pictures with their cell phones and digital cameras. Good job folks. Way to be.
