Snorkeling This Summer
posted June 16, 2009 - 12:39pm
How would you like a summer that includes a trip to a beautiful coral island that is just that, a simple coral island? An island with no markets, no permanent habitation, just the surrounding turquoise expanse of the sea all around, dotted with a few small islands and palm trees. Throw in a few loungers, hammocks tied to the coconut and palm trees, a glass of pinacolada and a snorkeling kit in hand – and you have the perfect summer!
Incredibly, I had just an experience. An experience called Redang or Pulau Redang. Off the east coast of the Malaysia peninsula in the South China Seas, Redang is a beautiful unspoilt island which offers sun, sea, sand and snorkeling in good measure. Its varied and rich marine life ensures that tourism is monitored closely by the Government to preserve the ecosystem and the entire area in and around Redang are protected Malaysian Marine Park.
So Where is Redang on the Map?

A flight from KL and a ferry from Kuala Terrengganu took us to the island. Then a small trudge along the beach as the luggage trolley followed, to Redang Pelangi on the Pasir Panjang beach. I fell in love with Pelangi from the first moment. Nothing more than log cabins, with wide balconies overlooking the beach, the outdoor eating area right on the sea. The resort was towards an end of the island offering isolation - with a picture perfect beach all to ourselves.
Off to registration and to get the snorkeling equipment and life jacket. Then the next few hours were spent just lounging around with sun block in hand and a lookout for the best hammock to go empty, while the children took the plunge into the waves.
Some shots from Redang Pelangi.

We spent the three days just snorkeling or on the beach. The experience was something out of this World. This was my third snorkeling trip in this part of the World and I could really enjoy the experience without the trepidation of previous trips and with some expertise. The Marine Center at Redang promises safe snorkeling experience from the very young to the very old. In the very shallow seas near the Marine Park, one could still see groupers, clownfish, triggerfish and more lured by bread. However the Best Snorkeling experience was in the Deep seas, where a ferry took the interested tourists. The huge formations of coral and the colorful fish nestled and swimming among the rocks are visual experiences I will never forget. Here are some pics from the deep sea snorkeling. The better snaps of the underwater world have gone awry – but that’s something for the next trip to concentrate on!

With The Fish
We paddled around all day after returning from the deep seas – trying to catch glimpses of fish in a small cove near the beach, in between trips to the hammock! The best part of Pulau Redang was the inexhaustible supply of tea, coffee, bread, butter and biscuit in the dining hall for the exhausted swimmers to munch on.
The nights were equally great. The kids slept early after the day’s exertion and one just settled down with beer after the barbecue dinner and listened to the Karaoke and / or the DJ…away from the crowd...near the crowd...on the beach...under the stars...
They loved it. Will Abmox enjoy this?
