So, What's the Deal With Twitter Followers?

So, What's the Deal With Twitter Followers?

I took the plunge a couple weeks ago and signed up for a Twitter account. My plan is to help publicize my articles more and increase traffic. So, I signed up for an account and began following some folks where I write my articles, in addition to my Dallas Cowboys and my favorite British comedians, Eddie Izzard and Ricky Gervais.

(If you are interested in following my tweets, go to http://twitter.com/jdubhub and click the "follow" button.)

Anyway, as soon as I started bookmarking articles on Twitter, I started getting people following me. When I clicked their profile, I most often saw that they were some marketing guru with a couple thousand followers and they were following a couple thousand themselves. As someone who regularly checks what has been tweeted on the Twitter homepage, I understand the challenge of reading the tweets of the couple dozen I already follow. What are the odds that those other Twits actually read every tweet that gets posted? Most? Any?

Another thing I noticed is that the number of people following me fluctuates. Since I will only follow those I know already, known as reciprocity, it stands to reason that those with a gazillion followers are either getting deleted for violations of Twitter TOS, which frowns upon both spamming hyperlinks without doing regular tweets and for having a poor follower to followee ratio, or they are not going to follow me anymore because I did not reciprocate their unsolicited following of me.

I will continue to use Twitter and will even expand use of it as I get more versed in social bookmarking. Eventually, my plan is to tweet my entire body of articles and anything I write forewith. Even if I don't get the motive of some of the Twits over on Twitter.

Thanks for reading.

I thought it was just me...whew...

I guess I am in the old folks bracket here too because I just don't get the whole tweetin' thing. All I ever ended up with was a page full of spam and no page visits.

I Don't Get Twitter Either?

I too set up an account to increase the number of readers at Twitter. Like you,  I just don't get it. Maybe it's our age?
